I was just thinking about popular music lately, including stuff I've been listening to, and honestly, there doesn't seem to be much mainstream music out there that promotes any positive messages for youngin's. With very few exceptions, I find that it's all about:
- promoting sex to 12-year-old girls;
- encouraging self-victimization among kids with normal lives because of trivial little problems that everyone has to go through;
- appealing to angsty kids by making them feel special for being on anti-depressants;
- enforcing the barriers between ethnicities (YES Kanye, we know you're black... you're also a person!)
I mean honestly, artists must know who their fans are... They must also know about the possible effects their lyrics are having on them... Why not write a song called "I wore a shirt today that wasn't see-through", or "I'm gonna suck it up and be fine"?
Is there nothing more to today's music besides catchiness?
