Sail Away, Sail Away, Sail Away
Since I'd been meaning to get out more, hung out tonight with Paul and gf Jessica at Monkey Town, which is apparently the coolest fucking place on earth. Of course it's in Williamsburg. Ok picture this: beyond the crochet-covered bar's ceiling and cardboard chandielier you enter a hallway meant to be sterile but instead covered in art. Side doors reveal fully decorated bathrooms blasting ambient noises from McCarren Park as part of a sonic art installation (in a bathroom? Excellent!). Go beyond the hallway into what can only be described as a digital womb: former warehouse (natch) converted into a restaurant with low tables and cushy couches, each wall entirely covered by a giant screen, each screen playing the same psychadelic/experimental/avant-garde film/animation/music video/etc.
And it's classy.
This contemporary jazz group called 4 5 6 did improvised compositions ALONG WITH IMPROVISED VIDEO and previously written works as well, both music and video were excellent. They played in the center of the room while their trippy videos played, INCLUDING a Jan Svankmajer short, and some of you know he rocks my world. While we ate. Yes.
Then we stayed after the band packed up to watch this compliation of avant-garde mostly animations, giantly projected, a lot of stuff that's made by Paper Route (which I can't find the site for, but it's that insane Microsoft Paint/Flash animation of hyper weird shit on Paul's Lightning Bolt dvd), something we recognized from Wonder Showzen, stop motion stuff, chalk animations (!), etc. We might have been the last people there. This place would make the ultimate dance party venue, though space is limited.
I definitely want to take everyone I know here. Food's a little pricey but oh it was good. Oh so very good.
