He just ain’t nothing special, you thought to yourself; he just ain’t nothing special because he’s Uchiha Sasuke and Uchiha Sasuke can go and rot in hell for all I care.
But what you said instead was, “Hey, uh-excuse me; um, sorry to be bothering you and all, but where’s the exit?” and you are so embarrassed by his odd stare (because you’re new! You’re new!, and He’s old!-old to the school, not his age-he looked like he was about fourteen in a crowd of sixteen-year-olds) that you wanted to curse the whole world (Goddamnit, stop staring at me, you wanted to say but kept your mouth shut).
“It’s over there,” he said after a while, pointing in some obscure direction (there was a girl in the corner who looked extremely worried for you but, tch, girls were usually like that, weren’t they?)
“O-oh.” You faltered for a little bit-didn’t you?-and you were so angry that you bristled back up again-because you were, goddamnit, going to be-going to be-King of the School one day, and Uchiha Sasuke was just going to be a burden only you had to bear until a few more years.
(You would show them.)
“Thanks,” you said.
-
may.
You think that it has been a long, long time since you’ve first stepped into this hellhole, but it takes only one whisper-
Are you lost?
-to bring you back to reality.
And it was him who told you (you hated him; you’ve made it impossibly clear to the world; you said, “Oi, Uchiha Sasuke, I’m gonna beat you one day!”-but that was in your head; you loathed him so openly-a mention of him brought you to your end, it was so bad) that you were so silly sometimes, that you were such a child and you said back to him, “Well, you think you’re so great and adult-like, but I don’t see you trying to take care of anyone else besides me.”
And all he did was stare at you again (Again! And again! And again! It’s so goddamn annoying) and said with much difficulty (you can tell because he leaned his head back and took a deep breath), “It’s that way.”
He pointed.
You hated him.
-
june.
“In America-” you said to him once.
“This is Japan,” he snapped coolly-the same way he snaps his book shut when he is irritated; the same way he snaps his fingers quickly when he is frustrated with someone.
And for the first time in your sixteen years of living, you miss your mother so bad it hurts your sixteen-year-old heart.
-
july.
“Is today your birthday?”
And he gives you a look so morbid that you withdraw quickly as if you were stung by a bee, but he sighed and said a simple, “Yes.”
But he knows you want answers. But he knows you need more than one-word replies. Why do you even bother calling him your best friend when he knows every single little detail about you but doesn’t grant your single wish of long, long, detailed things? So you watched his eyes, then; you looked long and hard for them.
“You’re seventeen today?”
“Yes.”
With a deep breath, you said:
“Then you are my hyung, right?”
He froze again, like that simple word would kill him if you said it again (Say it again and again and again, the sinister voice inside your head whispered; say it again and again and again until he dies) and narrowed his eyes, breaking one piece off of your bond.
“Where did you learn that word.”
(Not a question. It was not meant to be a question.)
And you countdown-hana, dul, seot, neot!-until he explodes (he is a four-second exploder and you start to worry when he stays still).
He takes a book from the nearby shelf without even looking back.
“Get out.”
(The book went flying.)
-
august.
You two don’t speak anymore.
-
september.
“Hyung,” you said.
“I thought I told you that you couldn’t say it to me.”
“Hyung.” (Make him die, the voices said.) “Where are you going?”
(Silence hung by only a thin string.)
“… Were you watching me?”
“No.”
“If you could, would you go with me?”
(His leg is halfway out the window; his backpack was slipping on his right shoulder and, somehow, he looked as normal as he had ever been.)
“… Yes.”
(His leg was going further and further.)
“Do you love me?”
“I-!”
“Annyeonghi gyeseyo, Naruto.”
(When he climbed down onto the hard ground beneath, you finally say-)
“Annyeonghi gaseyo, Sasuke.”
hyung: "older brother."
annyeonghi gyeseyo: "goodbye"; the person going says this.
annyeonghi gaseyo: "goodbye"; the person staying says this.
hana, dul, seot, neot: "one, two, three, four."
