”I still don’t think this is a good idea.”
”You’re clogging the lines, if you don’t have anything helpful to say, then don’t talk.”
”But-“
”Both of you, knock it off. He’s trying to concentrate.”
“Thanks DooJoon hyung,” the young man working at the control panels chuckled, the vast majority of his attention on what he was doing rather than the conversation in his ears. Hands flew over the buttons and sensors, switching screens, deleting lines of code in the blink of an eye.
He was the only one in the room, dark except for the multitude of screens lining the walls. Screens that showed different areas of the city, but from a moving perspective, like they were looking through someone’s eyes.
And that was exactly what the screens were for, in fact.
”Are you just about done?”
The quiet voice in his ear was worried, its owner having remained silent up until now. The android at the controls smiled a little, nodding even though they couldn’t see him. “Just about. Be patient.”
”I don’t get what this is supposed to do to help anyways,” grumbled the one who had been protesting the whole idea.
”It will help. KiBum knows what he’s doing.”
”Doesn’t it ever feel like he’s running us around in circles?”
Chuckling, the android at the controls shook his head. “Sometimes, but then again, he never really tells us the full story, right? Maybe it’s better that way.” He tapped a button and sighed in relief, leaning back. “All set.”
“It’s planted?”
“Yeah. I guess we just wait to see if it works now.” He closed the Soulless directory and exited out of the program, starting to punch in a few quick lines of code to conceal what he’d done.
”…Shit. Shit shit shit, you have to move, now!”
The line was suddenly alive with questions, voices asking what was wrong.
”They caught on, guards are coming your way. Get out of there!”
Eyes widening, the android moved faster, hurrying to finish up. “I need to erase my tracks, or they’ll figure it out.”
”Do it quickly, we’re on our way.”
“No, don’t,” he said hurriedly. “Don’t compromise your positions. I’m just about done.”
His fingers flew faster over the controls, fear spurring him on until finally the screen went black. “Done!”
”Go!”
The android grabbed his bag and slung it over his shoulders, bolting for the door. He made it out into the hallway and into the adjacent one before a body slammed into him from the side. Yelling, he hit the guard hard enough to spin the other android’s head backwards and ran, the voices in his ears giving him escape routes.
But no matter how fast he ran, he wasn’t fast enough.
”LOOK OUT!”
Pain flared in one leg and he went down with a shout, hitting the ground hard. Sparks flew, and when he looked back, he saw one leg had been severed just above the knee, hanging on by a single wire.
The guards were closing in. Looking around wildly, he could see no way to escape. The others on the mission were too far away. The guards were going to shut him down, and take apart his CPU to find out what he’d been up to in one of the most protected sections of the facility.
No…he wasn’t going to let them.
“It’s up to you guys now,” he said as his fingers slipped under his own shirt to unlock his chest panel.
”Don’t you even think about it!” cried out one of the voices. ”We’re close by, we’ll get you out!”
“No. You’re going to go on with the plan as discussed, no arguing.” He sat up and leaned against the wall, bag on the ground beside him as he found what he was looking for hidden amongst his wiring…a small box, with only a single button.
“KiBum’s on to something…don’t let him down.” He closed his eyes, listening to the five voices yelling at him to stop. “It was an honor knowing you all,” he whispered.
”KIKWANG!” screamed a voice in his ear as he pressed the button and self-destructed.
