”Who are you?”
”Don’t you recognize me, YoungWoon?”
”I’ve never seen you before in my life.”
The smile on his lips was sad, heartbreaking. “Well… I suppose that’s alright. But I know you, YoungWoon. I’ve known you for a long time.”
Kim YoungWoon, or KangIn as he liked to be called, was your ordinary student. Part of his university’s football team, majoring in Physical Education, he was popular among all the students for his blunt, no-nonsense yet soft personality. He was like the teddy that pretended to be a grizzly, intimidating yet cute. He’d been in a few relationships, but since breaking up with his last girlfriend a few months ago, he hadn’t been in a new relationship, or even dated anyone since.
Because no matter who he looked at, which girl he talked and flirted with, his mind kept wandering elsewhere. Mostly to him… The boy in his dreams.
He could never remember the dreams fully, just bits and pieces. They were never exactly the same; sometimes he was in the schoolyard, sometimes near the river, sometimes in a club downtown. But there was always one consistency in them; that boy was always there. The one with a bright smile, showing only a single dimple, hair tied back in a small ponytail at the back of his hair, locks dyed brown. He was in all KangIn’s dreams, for nearly two months now.
He swung his legs back and forth over the edge of the roof, then turned to give a dimpled smile to KangIn. “Wouldn’t it be fun to just fly over the city? To see all the lights at nighttime? Catch the clouds?”
KangIn looked down at the ground below, so far away, and shook his head. “We can’t fly, LeeTeuk. We don’t have wings.” LeeTeuk just smiled.
That was his name…. LeeTeuk. That was what he had called himself, the second time KangIn had dreamt about him. Nothing else about that dream had stuck after he woke up, just that cheery smile on the inside of his eyelids, and that name on the tip of his tongue.
KangIn was sure he’d never seen that boy before, not outside his dreams… And yet, there was something gentle and familiar about him, soothing. KangIn soon looked forward more to sleeping than hanging out with his friends, because that meant he got to see him again. Sometimes while awake he’d look for a boy named LeeTeuk, looking up the name on the Internet, in the newspapers, anywhere he might get an answer. But there was never anything. And KangIn had to admit LeeTeuk just didn’t exist.
LeeTeuk was smiling as he waited for KangIn, leaning against the wall. “It’s going to be Christmas soon,” He said with a soft laugh, the sound like bells in the boys ears. “It will snow then!”
“How do you know it’s Christmas?” KangIn asked, raising an eyebrow. LeeTeuk blinked up at him, not understanding.
“Why wouldn’t I?”
“You don’t exist,” KangIn said flatly. “You’re just a person in my dreams.”
“YoungWoon…” LeeTeuk whispered. His eyes showed so much sadness, just like when KangIn had first said he didn’t know who LeeTeuk was. “You say that… But do you really believe it?”
No, he didn’t. But there was no other way to explain this. “You don’t exist!”
That morning, KangIn woke up with tear-stains on his cheeks.
The weather grew colder, Christmas drawing closer. KangIn spent most of his time preparing for school finals, and by the time he went to sleep he had thought he would have been too tired to dream. But LeeTeuk was always there, waiting patiently, and when KangIn approached him he’d be enveloped in a warm hug, that contagious laughter ringing in his ears. Somehow, he couldn’t bring himself to tell LeeTeuk he wasn’t real again, not when the boy in his dreams was so happy.
”YoungWoon, look! The first snow!” LeeTeuk turned around and around, looking up at the sky and laughing as the white specks floated down to earth. KangIn watched him, wondering how the older male could not be cold when he was still in short sleeves.
He was drawn out of his thoughts by LeeTeuk flopping down on the now snow-covered ground, moving his arms back and forth. “What are you doing?” He asked, amused.
LeeTeuk stopped moving his arms. “Look, I’ve got wings!” The movement had shifted the snow around him, leaving a gap in the shape of wings.
When LeeTeuk stood up again, brushing the snow off, KangIn could have sworn the wings had stayed with him, a pearly glow behind him as he grinned at KangIn.
When he woke up and looked out the window next, he discovered it had snowed overnight.
”YoungWoon, why do you want people to call you KangIn?” LeeTeuk asked sleepily, resting his head on KangIn’s shoulder. The light touch of his breath on the younger males neck made KangIn shiver slightly, instinctively wrapping one arm around the other and drawing him a bit closer.
“KangIn means to be strong. Why, you don’t like it?”
“I like YoungWoon better,” LeeTeuk murmured. He shifted position, crawling in front of KangIn and peering up at him sleepily through his long bangs. KangIn blinked at him. LeeTeuk smiled faintly, then leaned upwards to press his lips softly against KangIn’s.
KangIn was caught by surprise, staring at the angel who was kissing him. He pushed LeeTeuk away from him slightly, breaking the kiss. “W-wait. What was that for?” He stammered, staring at LeeTeuk, who was smiling.
“It was a kiss, silly.”
“I know THAT. But, LeeTeuk, you’re…” Remembering the others sensitivity to the idea that he wasn’t real, he switched his words. “You’re… A guy. And I’m a guy. We’re both guys.”
LeeTeuk continued to smile. “I know.” Then he leaned up again, kissing KangIn again.
About to protest, KangIn stopped when he felt those soft lips again. (And somehow, he couldn’t quite bring himself to care anymore)
Finals was over, and school was out for the holidays. Instead of spending time with his friends, KangIn wandered around town, thinking about what he could do with LeeTeuk that night. Since that first kiss, he’d never felt happier. His friends were bugging him to get a new girlfriend, but the angel who appeared in his dreams, in his opinion, was ten times better than any girl.
Turning a corner, he caught sight of someone’s back farther up, a young male bundled up in a warm winter coat. His hair was tied in a small ponytail. And as the other turned a corner, he laughed. That laugh… That laughter…
KangIn ran, as fast as he could, but by the time he reached the corner, the person was gone.
”It’s Christmas Eve, YoungWoon,” LeeTeuk said, smiling up at him as he appeared. KangIn pulled his angel from his sitting position, pressing their lips together in a soft kiss. LeeTeuk laughed into the kiss, wrapping his arms around KangIn’s neck, the others own finding his small waist.
“Your present isn’t ready yet,” LeeTeuk said finally, a little breathless from the kiss. “Is it okay if I give it to you a bit later than Christmas?” KangIn nodded. “It’s fine.” He wasn’t sure how he was supposed to give LeeTeuk a gift. He could just hope something would appear in his dreams tomorrow that he could use as a gift.
LeeTeuk rested his head against KangIn’s chest, and murmured something. “What?” KangIn asked, looking down at him.
“Nothing.”
Christmas was great, as usual, but KangIn felt something was missing. And he knew what it was too. He wanted LeeTeuk to be here, in his arms, enjoying Christmas with him. But he knew he would have to wait until that night.
He went to bed early, making sure to tire himself out during the day so he would fall asleep faster. Lying down, KangIn looked at the snow falling outside his window, closing his eyes…
And woke up the next morning. Blinking a little, he sat up, seeing the sun slowly rising outside. He hadn’t dreamt at all last night. Had he tired himself out too much? But no… Even when he’d been exhausted to the point of collapsing, not once in the months he’d been with LeeTeuk had he missed dreaming of him a single night. Worried a little, he tried not to let it get to him.
The next night was the same. And the night after that, and after that. He stopped dreaming of LeeTeuk, returning to either dreamless sleep, or dreams that didn’t make much sense, and definitely didn’t include his angel. His family and friends commented on his growing bad mood, and the fact that as the days went by, he spent more time in his room trying to sleep than doing anything else. But it was no use.
The dreams were gone, and LeeTeuk gone with them.

“Welcome back class. I trust your holidays went well?”
KangIn laid his head on his desk, wishing the holidays had lasted just a bit longer. He didn’t feel like going back to school, but his parents had all but kicked him out of the house this morning. He closed his eyes, drifting off a little as he listened to the teacher talk.
“Oh, I almost forgot. You all have a new classmate starting today. Why don’t you come in and introduce yourself?”
“Hello.”
That voice. KangIn’s head shot up, making everyone around him jump. He looked around the class, his gaze drawn to the boy standing at the front beside the teacher. His throat felt dry. It just couldn’t be.
“My name is Park JungSu, I hope we can be good friends,” the boy said, bowing slightly. He looked around the class, dark brown eyes locking with KangIn’s own. He gave the shocked boy a dimpled smile.
“JungSu, you may sit down. There’s an empty seat next to YeSung, I believe. YeSung, raise your hand.”
The boy two rows behind KangIn raised his hand. JungSu ducked his head a little, walking between the desks towards the free desk. When he passed by KangIn, a slip of paper landed on the edge of KangIn’s desk. KangIn blinked, then carefully reached over and took it, looking over at JungSu who had sat down. The boy smiled at him again. KangIn looked back at the paper, holding it up so he could read what was written on it.
”Sorry I’m late.
Merry Christmas YoungWoon"
