Summary: RyeoWook and KyuHyun have been best friends all their lives. KyuHyun has a long-suffering crush on their classmate, SungMin, but never confessed, only telling RyeoWook. Unfortunately, RyeoWook is deeply in love with KyuHyun, and suffers under the knowledge that he'll forever be 'best friend only'. Secrets start to come out, and both their lives will literally turn upside-down
KyuHyun couldn’t sit still after RyeoWook ran out in tears. He finished making dinner, eating his own while setting a plate aside for his roommate whenever he returned. Sitting down on his bed, he found the inactivity brought the thought that RyeoWook had actually kissed him to the front of his mind, and he jumped back to his feet. Pacing around the room didn’t make the thoughts go away. He needed something to do with his hands.
He walked around the apartment, cleaning up and fixing whatever was out of place. He refused to thing about what had just happened. He didn’t love RyeoWook that way! The person he loved was SungMin, and RyeoWook had known that. RyeoWook was like the little brother he never had, even though the other was older than him. RyeoWook had always been there for him when he needed him, and even when he didn’t need him, offering his constant support and advice, and always there with a cup of hot chocolate and a warm smile and a gentle hug. He was the little brother who never shared his own problems, keeping everything inside instead of bothering KyuHyun with it, yet insisting that KyuHyun tell him everything that was on his mind. Shy, attentive, loving and kind-hearted. His best friend.
Remembering the tears that had streamed down the smaller boys face at the rejection twisted his heart in pain. He had only spoken the truth, but that truth had completely crushed the person who had always been there for him so unconditionally. It seemed like such a poor way to repay RyeoWook for his years of devotion and kindness, but he couldn’t go against his own heart. Lying to RyeoWook would have done nothing but make them both miserable in the end. Unfortunately, it was hard to believe himself as he paced around the room once again, wondering where RyeoWook was and if he was going to come back. Calling his cell, he reached the boy’s voice mail instead. “Hi, this is Kim RyeoWook, I’m not available right now. Please leave a message and I’ll get back as soon as I can.”
Steeling himself, KyuHyun took a deep breath. “RyeoWook, I’m so sorry,” He said softly. “I never meant to hurt you like that. I didn’t know you loved me that way. Please, come back home and we’ll talk this out. I can’t stand it, knowing you’re so upset because of me. Come back soon.”
He hung up, biting his lower lip in worry. It had been an hour since RyeoWook had run out, with no sign of the boy. Even the thought of seeing SungMin tomorrow wasn’t enough to cheer him up. He needed his best friend beside him right now.
Another hour later, the phone rang. KyuHyun ran to it, praying it was RyeoWook, at least to tell him where he was and that he was alright. “Hello?” He asked.
“Hello, is this Cho KyuHyun?”
A woman’s voice. KyuHyun deflated a bit, sitting down. “Yes, it is.”
“Are you familiar with a Kim RyeoWook?”
The boy jumped a bit. “Yes,” He said warily. Why did he have such a bad feeling about this?
“I’m sorry to be the one to tell you this, but your friend was in an accident.”
“…” KyuHyun blinked, several times. “I’m sorry, what?” He asked, not comprehending. When she repeated herself, he felt panic rising through him. “What happened? Is he alright?” He demanded, voice shaking.
“He was hit by a car two hours ago. An eye witness says that he ran out across the street without looking, and the driver didn’t have enough time to stop. He’ll be alright, though his condition was critical up until a little while ago.”
KyuHyun nearly let the phone drop out of his limp hand. Hit by a car. RyeoWook had always been the one to tell him, always check before crossing the street. He never jay-walked, always waited for the walkers light to turn green before crossing, even when there were no cars in sight. But when really upset about something RyeoWook tended to not pay attention to what was going on around him. Another stab of guilt, because he knew that if he had tried to stop RyeoWook from leaving, he wouldn’t have been hit.
“What hospital is he at?” He asked. The woman gave him the name and address, and he said a hasty goodbye before leaving the apartment as fast as he could. He took a taxi to the hospital, paying the fare and running inside. He had to make sure RyeoWook was okay. It was all his fault.
“Kim RyeoWook?” He asked the woman at the front desk. The woman looked up with a faint smile. “Room 246,” She replied.
He took the elevator up to the second floor, shivering a bit at the smell of the hospital. He hated hospitals, ever had since he had been in a car accident himself, hospitalized for many months. RyeoWook had been the one who visited him every day, would cook him food at home and bring it here instead of letting him eat the nasty hospital food, and would spend every free second with him, trying to cheer him up. That thought sped him along.
Room 246. Nudging the door open, he stopped when he saw the small figure in the large hospital bed. RyeoWook’s eyes were closed, needles poking into his arms and a clip on one index finger. A machine measured his heart rate beside him, its steady beeping boring into his mind. He looked so pale, lifeless and helpless in that giant bed that could have fit three people his size.
A doctor was marking down something on a chart beside him. He looked up when KyuHyun entered. “How is he?” KyuHyun asked.
“He had several fractured ribs from the hit, and a crack in his skull. He lost a lot of blood, but thankfully he was brought here on time. The hit to the head is the most worrisome.” He doctor tapped his pen against the clipboard lightly. “He should be waking up soon. If there’s any noticeable change in his behavior, please let me know.” With that, the doctor walked out.
KyuHyun slowly wnet to the side of the bed, sitting down in the chair. He reached out, fingertips lightly touching the back of RyeoWook’s hand. “Wookie… I’m really sorry…” He whispered lightly, bowing his head.
After some time, the hand under his fingers twitched. RyeoWook’s breathing changed as he stirred, eyelids fluttering. KyuHyun looked up, taking his best friends hand lightly. “RyeoWook… RyeoWook, open your eyes,” He said softly, sitting up straight.
RyeoWook opened his eyes, blinking a bit up at the ceiling. “Wha…” A confused look crossed his face as his eyes darted around the room, finally coming to rest on KyuHyun’s face.
KyuHyun couldn’t be more relieved. “You’re alright,” He breathed, squeezing the boy’s hand gently. RyeoWook glanced down at their joined hands, then up to KyuHyun’s face again. He looked… Lost?
“E-Excuse me… But… Who are you?”
