Chapter Fourteen:

Loud howling nearly deafened them all as the wind whipped around the area, knocking YeSung back down the hill as he had tried to join them. As soon as the bullet left the gun, the small piece of metal was torn from KiBums hands by the wind as both brothers fell on to their backs. The noise only grew, turning into a loud roar as, somewhere within all the racket, there was a bloodcurdling scream.

Then everything was silent.

None of those knocked down were brave enough to look up. KiBum was sick with worry. What if he’d hit DongHae instead? What if he had missed entirely, and the ghost was going to destroy them all any second now? He shut his eyes, afraid of what he might see should he look up.

It was KangIn who moved first, sitting up slowly and looking around. The wind was gone, the tall reeds around them all flat against the ground from the pressure. From where the two ghosts had been fighting, nothing moved. There was no sign of either poltergeist. Standing up, he looked around and cautiously made his way over to where he’d seen them last. The rogue poltergeist was gone without a trace. But where was DongHae?

RyeoWook pulled himself up off the ground with his good wrist, looking around. With a groan, YeSung hauled himself back to the right side of the hill for the third time, looking around at the damaged reeds and the people lying facedown on the ground. KyuHyun pushed himself back up to a sitting position, after being knocked onto one side. LeeTeuk and ChangMin, the only ones whom the wind hadn’t affected, looked around nervously before turning their attention back to SungMin, who hadn’t moved.

KiBum finally got up, joining his brother where he was standing, looking around for the missing ghost. “Where’s he?” The younger whispered, looking for DongHae. There was no sign of him anywhere. “Was he… Was he hit as well?” KangIn couldn’t answer, voice stuck in his throat.

Recalling how LeeTeuk and YoungWoong had glowed in his vision, KangIn wondered if DongHae glowed as well. Though he had no idea how to work his strange vision, he concentrated on looking around the field, straining his eyes in the hopes that something would change, before KiBum could fall apart just as KyuHyun had.

“That’s it, isn’t it? He’s gone…” His younger brother whispered, legs feeling weak under him. He’d lost DongHae. Before he could even tell him that yes, he did love him. His vision blurred, filling with tears. He’d never cried this often before this week. It seemed that happy endings were only for fairy tales after all.

KangIn, turning to look at KiBum, saw something in the corner of his eye. A faint, feeble glow that wasn’t coming from LeeTeuk nor ChangMin. Turning, he stared for a moment, then smiled faintly. “KiBum,” He said, nudging his shoulder and pointing.

DongHae pushed himself up off the ground with a groan, but his arms gave out on him halfway and he fell back down again. The ghost was all out of energy, and exhausted to the point of collapsing. His glow was so faint KangIn had easily missed it before. KiBum turned, then froze. “DongHae…” He was safe.

LeeTeuk looked up from where he was healing SungMin to see KiBum run towards the tired ghost, who still hadn’t noticed him. Then, beneath his hands, he felt SungMin draw in a shaky breath. KyuHyun cupped the boys face with his hands. “SungMin,” He breathed, watching the others eyelids flutter slightly, but not open. “He needs to be taken to the hospital right away, but he should make it,” LeeTeuk said tiredly, drawing his hands back and flopping down on the grassy hill, exhausted from his effort to save the humans life. ChangMin smiled at the couple, glad SungMin hadn’t suffered the same fate he had. Seeing movement out of the corner of his eyes, he turned his head to see YeSung helping RyeoWook to his feet, the shorter favoring his wrist and the taller dizzy after being knocked down the hill two times in a row.

DongHae, preoccupied with trying to stand up, didn’t notice he had company until gentle hands wrapped around his body, pulling him close. Wincing as the moment sent jabs of pain through his body, he looked up in confusion, to meet black eyes. “Ki… KiBum…?” He whispered, not sure what was going on, his head all messed up after being sent flying.

“You’re alright,” KiBum sighed, holding DongHae close. The ghost struggled for a moment, but thanks to his exhaustion, gave up quite easy, letting KiBum hold him. The younger enjoyed the moment, acknowledging what he had been missing out on up until now. After all, it’s said you only realize what you have until it’s gone, and KiBum had nearly fallen prey to his own stubbornness, and refusal to believe that the ghost boy in his arms meant so much more to him than he’d admit.

“I don’t understand,” DongHae murmured after a while, bringing himself out of his state of bliss forcefully. “Why are you doing this? Why do you keep finding me?”

KiBum’s grip on DongHae tightened slightly. “Because I was an idiot, and I don’t want to lose you,” he replied softly. Pulling away slightly, he looked down at DongHae nestled in his arms, the ghost looking back up at him with those doe-like eyes. “DongHae. Ask me that question again.”

“Question?” DongHae echoed, confused.

“The one you asked me on the rooftop yesterday.”

“… Ah…” DongHae blinked, unable to look away. “… Do you… Love me?” He whispered uncertainly.

KiBum’s answer came firmly, and without hesitation.

“Yes.”

DongHae stared up at him with mouth agape, looking like a fish out of water. KiBum couldn’t help but smile, patiently waiting for DongHae to come back to his senses. A minute passed, with DongHae too stunned to speak. Then, deciding to wake him up a little, KiBum hesitantly leaned down and kissed DongHae’s parted lips, a light peck. DongHae blinked several times as KiBum pulled back, then his eyes sparkled like a kid who’d seen Christmas for the first time. The ghost cried out in pure joy, pressing himself against KiBum’s chest hard enough to knock the human over, hugging him as tightly as his weakened state would allow.

“Saranghaeyo… Saranghayeo…”

LeeTeuk watched them, not noticing KangIn walk over to him. “I think we should leave them alone,” The human murmured in the Spirit Guides ear, LeeTeuk looking up at him. “We need to bring SungMin to the hospital. As well as the others. Looks like Wookie’s got a sprained wrist, and KyuHyun’s pretty banged up as well.”

Nodding in reply, LeeTeuk stood up. Despite his injuries, KyuHyun carried SungMin in his arms, standing up. YeSung and RyeoWook walked over. Then, the eternal magnae gave a start, looking around.

“Where’s EunHyuk?”

He was gone. “EunHyuk!” KangIn called, but there was no reply. “We should look for him,” ChangMin said with a frown, but when SungMin started coughing, KyuHyun shook his head. “I’m bringing him to the hospital,” He said firmly, turning and walking off. The others exchanged glances.

“I’ll look for him,” ChangMin offered. LeeTeuk nodded, the rest of them heading off after KyuHyun, leaving KiBum and DongHae alone in the field.

“What are you watching?” Arms wrapped around his thin waist as the Angel watched through the Windows of Heaven. Perching his chin on Jae’s shoulder, YunHo answered his own question himself. “That group of humans again? You’ve taken quite the interest in them, Joongie. I’m getting jealous here.”

JaeJoong smiled faintly. “Don’t be. But this group is certainly special. They’re going to go far.”

YunHo frowned at him. “You know something, don’t you? You always take on that tone when you know more than you’re telling. Does He have something planned for them?”

JaeJoong raised one eyebrow. “What makes you say that I’d know?”

“Well, if anyone knows, it would be His Right Hand, hm?”

“You give me too much credit, Yunnie.”

YunHo’s lips quirked into a smile. “Whatever you say, YoungWoong.” JaeJoong just laughed.

*****

“Good news. His injuries were bad, but not as bad as feared. He’ll have to stay with us for a few weeks, but he’s expected to make a full recovery.”

KyuHyun let out the breath he was holding, relieved. YeSung and RyeoWook smiled at each other, the smaller with a cast around his wrist. The bone had been fractured, but with a little care it would mend completely. YeSung’s bruises had been treated, and he was also fine to go. KyuHyun on the other hand, wasn’t so lucky; he was being made to stay in the hospital overnight, to treat his multiple cuts and bruises, and a dislocated shoulder. He said he didn’t mind as long as he stayed in the same room as SungMin, and his wish was granted.

“Thank you doctor,” The ghost hunter said, watching the elder man walk away. LeeTeuk and KangIn left shortly after hearing the news, wishing them all the best. YeSung and RyeoWook remained with them for a while, keeping KyuHyun company in the hospital room he shared with SungMin, but they left too as the sun set.

Now, as the world outside the hospital windows lay dark and silent, KyuHyun pushed himself off his bed and went to sit in the chair beside SungMin’s. The older male was asleep still, attached to a heart monitor to make sure there wasn’t any sudden heart failure. He looked peaceful, now that the blood had been cleaned off his face and he was tugged in neatly with the white sheets. KyuHyun sought one small hand, and held it.

Stroking the soft skin, he watched SungMin sleep. “I promise I’ll protect you,” He whispered, squeezing the others hand. Looking down at the sheets for a moment, when he looked up next his gaze was met with a pair of warm, comforting eyes. SungMin smiled tiredly, squeezing KyuHyun’s hand in return.

“And I’ll protect you too.”

“The stars are so beautiful,” DongHae whispered, peering up at them through his thick bangs. They were out on KiBum’s balcony, the ghost sitting in the humans lap as they watched the stars above.

“They are,” KiBum agreed, but he wasn’t watching the stars. DongHae looked back at the boy, who was looking at him, and smiled faintly. Then he curled up against the others chest again with a content sigh. His body still ached from the fight, but it was manageable, and he didn’t want to tell KiBum for fear of ruining the moment. He’d wanted this for so long… Ever since he first saw KiBum, he’d been in love, and now, just as it mattered the most, his dream was coming true.

“Thank you.” KiBum looked down as DongHae whispered the words, tilting his head so he could see the others face. “Why?” He asked.

“For loving me,” DongHae replied, smiling up at him. Then he carefully leaned up and pressed his lips to Kibum’s. After a moment, KiBum returned the kiss, weaving his fingers into the hair at the back of DongHae’s head to deepen the kiss. It felt nothing short of Heaven.

Speaking of Heaven…

KiBum finally broke the kiss. “How much time do we have left?” He murmured against the others lips. DongHae blinked, dazed. “What time is it?”

KiBum looked at his watch. “11:45,” He reported, frowning. Why was time passing by so fast?

DongHae sighed, closing his eyes. “I wish we could just stay here forever,” He said softly, feeling sleepy. But ghosts couldn’t sleep… Even so, he had a good idea about where this feeling was coming from. “LeeTeuk said at the stroke of midnight, I’ll be gone…” He opened his eyes, looking up at KiBum. “So I’m going to enjoy this time while it lasts,” He said softly, smiling up at the one he loved.

KiBum nodded, saddened. They didn’t have much time left. “I’m sorry I couldn’t be there for you when you were alive,” He murmured, running his fingers through DongHae’s long hair. DongHae shook his head. “Don’t be… This is more than enough for me,” He said tiredly.

“Are you alright?” KiBum asked softly.

“I’m sleepy, is all.” DongHae rubbed one eye a little, looking up at the sky. “Oh, look! A shooting star!” KiBum drew his attention skyward, watching the white light streak across the night sky. “Make a wish,” DongHae continued, closing his eyes.

KiBum did the same, but he knew his wish couldn’t come true. Because his wish was to have more time with DongHae. To get to know the boy being the ghost, and show him the love he deserved but never got. But that would never happen.

When he opened his eyes, DongHae was watching him with a smile. “Don’t tell me,” The ghost ordered. “Or it won’t come true.” KiBum nodded mutely.

“KiBum?”

“Hm?”

“I love you.”

“I love you too.” DongHae smiled and buried his face against KiBum’s shirt again.

Inside the house, they heard the large grandfather clock strike midnight. DongHae stiffened in KiBum’s arms, then relaxed, sleep starting to pull him under.

KiBum listened to the clock, counting the chimes. “I’m scared,” DongHae whispered. KiBum had to blink back tears. “Just remember, I will always love you,” He told the ghost, and felt DongHae smile.

“That’s what I needed to hear… Thank you…”

KiBum closed his eyes, as they both fell silent. As the final stroke sounded, and silence dominated the night air once more, he slowly opened his eyes again. Tears spilled over his cheeks, falling silently into his now empty lap.

“Goodbye… DongHae…”

*****

Someone was shaking his arm. “Hey. Hey, kid. Wake up.”

“…”

“This isn’t the place to take a nap.”

Slowly, EunHyuk opened his eyes, blinking. At first he thought he was blind; there was nothing but darkness. Then, as he waved one hand in front of his eyes, he noticed he could see his hand clearly. He didn’t have time to ponder this though, as suddenly a face appeared in his field of vision.

“Good, you’re awake. You had me worried there.”

EunHyuk looked at the boyish face in front of him; the other male obviously older than he was, yet childlike at the same time. Groaning, he sat up, rubbing his eyes and looking around.

It was all pitch black. Looking down, EunHyuk gave a start; although he could feel a ground beneath him, it looked like he was floating over a chasm, with no ground in sight anywhere.

“It’s odd, I know. You get used to it.”

EunHyuk looked up at the man beside him. “What’s going on?” He blurted out. “Who are you? Where am I?”

“Woah, one question at a time.” The other waved his hands in the air. “First, answer mine. What year is it right now?”

EunHyuk looked at him blankly. “2009.”

“Ah.” The other seemed pleased. “So it’s not too far off yet…”

“…?”

“Sorry. That was supposed to be internal, but when you’re wandering alone for a long time… Well…”

EunHyuk just stared at him.

“Anyways…” The other sighed, rubbing the back of his head and stood, before extending a hand to EunHyuk to help him stand up himself.

“The name’s Tablo. Welcome to the Void.”
