Summary: Chanyeol wants to be promoted from employee to boyfriend.
Chanyeol glares at his computer screen, annoyed with the paper work he was given. This was boring work; boring and work being two words that were his least favourite. He was surrounded by the sound of the people typing away, hushed voices and every once in a while, a telephone rings. Chanyeol sighs for the fifth time this hour; this setting was not set for him.
He suddenly straightens his back and glances in the window of the large office. He can see the figure of a small man at his desk and squints as he watches the figure stand up, making his way to the door. Chanyeol watches for a bit more before he realizes, oh shit, he's coming -
The door swings open and Chanyeol's head whips back to the computer screen. His heart is suddenly racing and he feels his cheeks flush a deep red. From the corner of his eyes, he sees his boss walk towards Byun Baekhyun, an arrogant wise guy, to check on his work. Chanyeol squints at his coworker as he laughed at something his boss had said. That should be him laughing at a joke his boss had cracked; it most certainly should not be Byun Baekhyun.
"You're staring."
Chanyeol whips his head around to glare at his annoying jerk of a co-worker, Luhan, who sat next to him at his own computer. His eyes are bright and a smirk sits on his lips and Chanyeol hesitates to strangle him right then and there. "Am not."
"You totally are." Luhan laughs lightly. "I'm surprised no one else knows except for me." He suddenly leans closer to Chanyeol, his face about a feet away from his own. "I mean, who would have thought you would have the hots for Kim Joonmyeon, boss of SM International Ltd?"
"Shut up," Chanyeol hisses, checking to see if said Joonmyeon had heard him. When he saw that Joonmyeon was still engrossed in Baekhyun's work, Chanyeol crumples up a nearby piece of paper and throws it at Luhan who flinches as the paper bounces off his forehead.
"You little piece of - " Luhan is cut off because it seems that Joonmyeon is done talking to Baekhyun and continues his round in the office. Chanyeol could feel his skin prickle and his suit suddenly seemed way too tight on him.
"Chanyeol."
At the mention of his name, Chanyeol's back straightens, his eyes scanning for the source of the voice. Joonmyeon stood in front of the bulletin board, his back facing him as Chanyeol scurried over, his heart pounding. Joonmyeon looked especially good today in his casual all black suit and Chanyeol prayed to all the gods he could possible think of (he even prayed to Santa and the tooth fairy) that Joonmyeon had good things to say to him.
"Y-yes?" Chanyeol can barely utter, his mouth suddenly dry.
Joonmyeon turns to face Chanyeol as he stands next to him, a bright smile on his face. Good, Chanyeol thinks, this was good. "Can you clean the bulletin board for me? This thing is so messy; there's stuff here that's from two months ago."
As if his life was a scene out of Ouran High School Host Club, he feels like his world cracks like a mirror and crumbles. "Y-yeah, sure."
"Thanks, Chanyeol." Joonmyeon's smile never wavers as he nods, patting Chanyeol on his arm before walking past him.
Chanyeol watches his back as Joonmyeon glances at the other computers before re-entering his own office and closing the door behind him. Chanyeol frowns, huffs and scrunches his nose before walking towards the recycling bin by the back of the office. Luhan bursts out in a fit of laughter as he walks by, trying his best to keep his laughter in and failing miserably. Chanyeol thinks Luhan barely tried at all.
"Maybe if he was a little taller, he would notice you," Luhan giggles as Chanyeol bends down to pick up the blue bin. "You're twice his height."
Chanyeol fakes a laugh before glaring at him and makes sure to 'accidentally' hit the back of Luhan's chair with the recycling bin on his way back to the bulletin board. One of these days, Chanyeol was sure he was going to kill his co-worker.
Chanyeol doesn't like coffee but he's in the office kitchen, not really having an idea what he was doing. Cream or half and half? What the hell was half and half anyways? Truth to be told, he was only here hoping to bump into Joonmyeon but he hadn't shown up for the past hour Chanyeol was in here (figuring out how to work the coffee machine took some time).
"Good morning, Chanyeol."
Chanyeol whips his head around, his heart nearly jumping out of his chest until he realizes its not Joonmyeon and instead, his obnoxious jerk of a co-worker.
Luhan laughs, his eyes twinkling as he opens the fridge, scanning the shelves. "Thought I was someone else, didn't you?"
"N-no," Chanyeol huffs, turning back to his coffee as he stirred in sugar. Luhan giggles like a school girl in mockery and Chanyeol glares at him.
"Why don't you just ask him out?" Luhan pauses, pulling out a peach and thinks as he closes the fridge door. "No, scratch that. If you did, I'd miss out on the nervous mess of Chanyeol whenever Joonmyeon is around."
Chanyeol scowls and decides to go with cream, pouring it in as he watched it mix with the coffee. "Who isn't nervous around their own boss?"
"Uh, sure, everyone's nervous but because they're scared they might get a boner during a meeting."
Chanyeol throws his used tissue at Luhan who only cackles in response. "Even if I am, I have a plan to get the OTP to sail."
Luhan wrinkles his nose. "OTP?"
"You know, like, one true pairing. Our ship?"
Luhan coughs. "Please don't tell me you're one of those people." He sighs, shaking his head. "Just show me this plan you have."
Chanyeol pulls out a neatly folded piece of paper and smoothes it out on the table as Luhan leaned over, squinting at the words. Last night Chanyeol especially couldn’t stop thinking of Joonmyeon and decided, enough was enough. Chanyeol was going to make Joonmyeon fall in love with him. So, he came with a very thorough idea and plan.
“Jesus, Yeol. Your writing doesn’t do me justice,” Luhan complains and Chanyeol snatches the paper back. “I’m joking, joking. Yeesh.” Chanyeol looks smug as he flattens the paper out again.
PLAN CHANMYEON
hand in remarkable work
smile at him a lot
“accidentally” bump into him into the halls
make small talk
get close with him
ASK HIM OUT!!!
The last bullet is circled, highlighted and bolded. It’s the most important part of the plan. Once he commences that plan, he’ll be dating Kim Joonmyeon, boss of SM International Ltd. Chanyeol turns to Luhan before folding the paper back to its original state. “I already hand in remarkable work so I just have to work on the other bullets.”
"What do you even see in Joonmyeon? He's a total dweeb." Luhan makes a face, standing straight, yawning.
"He's the cutest dweeb. He's so hard-working and is always smiling. He looks out for people he cares about and I'm determined to be one of those people," Chanyeol declares, slamming his fist down on his desk and receiving a few glares and 'shh's' sent his way. He bows his head slightly apologetically before turning back to Luhan. "It would help if you stopped with the teasing.”
Luhan makes retching noises before laughing. “You’re too funny, Chanyeol. I’m going to be teasing you even if you do start dating our boss.”
Chanyeol walks into the office the next day with a box of sweets.
”Isn’t it a little too early for Valentines Day?” Luhan asks, leaning over to grab a chocolate.
Chanyeol swats his hand before he can even touch a macaroon. “They’re not for you. They’re for my plan on getting Joonmyeon to fall in love with me.”
Luhan scoffs. “Haven’t you ever heard of the saying, ‘don’t get your honey where you get your money’?” Luhan props his chin on his hand and sighs at Chanyeol as his friend ignores his friend, making sure the bow on the chocolate box was straighten. Today, was the day that his plan would commence and today was also the day that Joonmyeon would start falling for Park Chanyeol.
”Chanyeol,” Joonmyeon calls as he approaches the said male who was typing away at his new paperwork. “Fascinating work on that last transcript.”
Chanyeol beams. That was the first on his checklist to go. “Thanks. You know me. Park Chanyeol never hands in anything less than perfect.”
Joonmyeon laughs, his eyes crinkling as he placed a hand on Chanyeol’s shoulder, sending chills up his spine. “That just means I’ll have higher expectations now.”
Chanyeol laughs along, trying his best to ignore the goosebumps growing on his skin. Joonmyeon gives him one last pat on the back before making his way back into the office and Chanyeol grins to himself, feeling good about himself before returning to his typing. He feels a pair of eyes on him and he looks up to see a Luhan, shaking his head in oblivion.
”A boss pet. That’s what you are,” Luhan says and Chanyeol shrugs, brushing his co-worker off. If that was what he had to be called in order to get his plan to work, so be it.
Chanyeol’s mouth hurts from smiling all day.
”You know, you’re starting to give off a stalker Joker kinda vibe,” Luhan says one day as the two of them walk out of the office. Luhan laughs, swinging his briefcase in his hand as Chanyeol glares down at him.
”Joker could be Joonmyeon’s favourite villain,” Chanyeol argues, trying to make the best of Luhan’s teasing in this situation.
”No one has a favourite villain,” Luhan continues to argue, circling around to the passenger side of Chanyeol’s car. Chanyeol doesn’t know why he still agrees to drive his obnoxious co-worker home. Curse his nice and friendly personality. “They’re villains. You know, bad guys.”
Chanyeol scowls but when he spots Joonmyeon coming out of the office, his expression immediately changes to a bright smile. His smile must be a mega-watt because Joonmyeon glances over to their car, and he waves at Chanyeol who waves back enthusiastically. Luhan groans beside him before getting into the car and Chanyeol glares at him before turning back to watch Joonmyeon get his own car.
”I think it’s working,” Chanyeol boasts, grinning as he climbs into his own car and starts up the engine.
Luhan scoffs. “You don’t get it. Joonmyeon is one of the nicest people on this planet. You could rear-end his car and he’d smile and say it’s okay. Heck, he’d probably even offer to pay for your car expenses. You could kiss him and he’d still think you were just practicing for the real thing.” Chanyeol turns on the radio, ignoring the bewildered look from Luhan. “What I’m trying to say is Joonmyeon is oblivious. He’ll assume you’re just trying to be friendly and not trying to get his d - “
”If you keep talking, I’ll have to kick you out of my car,” Chanyeol mutters and beams in triumph when Luhan growls and slinks down in his seat.
A week has passed and Chanyeol hates to admit it but Luhan was right.
Joonmyeon was oblivious to everything in his surroundings. Even after the chocolates, the compliments and laughing at the terrible jokes that the older male told, Joonmyeon had no idea that Chanyeol had feelings for him. Which is why Chanyeol is ‘working overtime’ on a Saturday night just that he can tell Joonmyeon how he feels with all the other workers gone.
”Chanyeol, are you just about done?” Joonmyeon turns the light off to his office as he steps out into the bigger atmosphere, squinting at the only lit computer screen before making his way over. “It’s practically 11PM.”
”Just about,” Chanyeol replies with, placing a period on the last sentence. Truth was, he finished the stupid transcript three hours ago but had pretended to be working until Joonmyeon would exit his cave. Which was now. Joonmyeon leans over Chanyeol’s shoulder, reading his work and Chanyeol can feel his breath lightly on his neck which sends chills up his spine. “Does it look okay?” Chanyeol asked, shakily.
Joonmyeon nods. “Yeah, looks about right. Are you done then? Can we leave this workplace?” He asks, laughing straighten and Chanyeol turns around in his chair. He doesn’t do much except stare at his boss and curses every single cell in his body. Fuck, out of all people he had to fall in love with his boss.
”Hyung,” Chanyeol says and his voice almost cracks. Fuck, he’s never been his nervous before.
Joonmyeon blinks. “What is it, Chanyeol? Can we walk and talk because It’s Okay, That’s Love starts in twenty minutes and I figure if I take the highway right now, I’ll still make it for the theme song - “
”Hyung, I need to talk to you about something.” Chanyeol pauses, standing up and takes a deep breath, concentrating on the pretty pattern on Joonmyeon’s tie. He then concentrates on the floor tiles once he finds himself thinking inappropriate things. Joonmyeon is still waiting. “Okay, don’t think I’m weird or anything…”
Joonmyeon laughs, his eyes crinkling. “I already think that, Yeol.”
”Oh. Okay.” Chanyeol stares down at Joonmyeon and tries not to swoon at how cute his boss was. Practically pocket-sized and always full of bubbles. If you thought about it carefully, there was no one better for him. Chanyeol bends down to be eye-to-eye with Joonmyeon and watches the older male laugh awkwardly. “I like you, hyung.”
Joonmyeon doesn’t have a chance to respond because Chanyeol leans a little more forwards and their lips meet. Call him cliche, but Chanyeol feels fireworks burst and every single feeling that was equivalent to happiness was what Chanyeol was feeling right now. Joonmyeon kisses exactly as Chanyeol had suspected; sweet, soft and gentle. Joonmyeon practically loses balance at one point and almost falls over before Chanyeol holds him up with his arms.
When they finally break their kiss, Joonmyeon’s pink to the tips of his ears. He coughs, backing away to the doors. “I’ll see you tomorrow for work, Chanyeol.”
And he’s gone, out the door and Chanyeol thinks fuck, he’s fucked up.
“You didn’t even let him respond to what you said?” Luhan screeches over the phone that night and Chanyeol muffles his groan into his pillow. “Are you fucking insane? You just went in for a kiss like he might actually like you back?”
”Do you ever say anything nice?” Chanyeol mutters, flipping around on his back as he stared up at the ceiling.
”I just said something nice about our boss a few seconds ago,” Luhan laughs. “I pointed out he had standards.”
”I don’t know why I called you,” Chanyeol sighs, closing his eyes as he rubbed his forehead. “Do you think I’ll get moved to another location?”
”You’ll be lucky if he has. I’d fire you if you kissed me.” Luhan makes a retching noise. “Consider yourself lucky that he’s too nice to call the cops.”
Chanyeol figures Luhan was no help on making him feel better so he says his goodbyes and hangs up before cuddling into his bed. He had everything planned. And it failed. And he had his Plan B which failed also. Where would he work after this? What if he does get fired like Luhan had said? Did Joonmyeon hate him?
Chanyeol shuts his eyes a bit tighter, wishing for tomorrow not to come.
The next day, Chanyeol considers calling in sick.
But then, that’d ruin his perfect attendance record so he pulls his body out of bed and drags himself to work. Did a perfect attendance record matter when you’d be getting fired? Chanyeol dreaded for the day to come.
Joonmyeon doesn’t show up until lunch. “Chanyeol. My office,” he calls out as he walks past the few dozens of computers, not even glancing at the other workers or even saying good morning like he always does. Luhan shakes his head, a pitying look on his face as Chanyeol heaves a sigh, pushing his chair back and standing up.
”As much as I’d hate to say this, I hate to see you go,” Luhan says, frowning and Chanyeol’s not sure if he’s trying to make his mood better or worse.
When Chanyeol enters the office, Joonmyeon’s eyebrows are furrowed as they stare at the computer screen. He quietly slips inside, and bites his lip nervously as he waits for his boss to acknowledge him. Chanyeol’s not sure how much time has past (probably five seconds) but it feels like a decade until Joonmyeon tears his eyes away from the computer.
”You called?” Chanyeol asks, clearing his throat.
”Uh, yes.” It was clear that Joonmyeon was nervous too at the way he tapped his fingers on the table. “The way you behaved yesterday was very inappropriate, Chanyeol.” Joonmyeon says, sighing. “It was very unbusiness like and if I wanted, I could call up some authorities to have this situation handled with.”
”I know, I wasn’t thinking straight.” Chanyeol stands and so does Joonmyeon. “I’ll just - you don’t have to get authorities; that’s much too much trouble on your already busy day. I’ll just leave on my own account and you can file it as quit or fire, or whatever it is - “
”No, Chanyeol. I don’t think you understand.” Joonmyeon circles the table and stands in front of his own desk, leaning backwards. “I said if I wanted to. But I don’t want to.”
Chanyeol holds his breath. “I don’t think I understand.”
”Chanyeol, you’re not getting fired. You’re not even getting moved because…” Joonmyeon cocks his head to the side as if hesitating. “You’re not getting moved because I think I have some feelings for you as well. I went home that night and all I could think was of you,” Joonmyeon admits, shrugging.
They talk a bit more, to clear up the atmosphere and when Chanyeol leaves the office, he feels ten times lighter. He feels his lungs feel with laughter when he sees Luhan packing his things into a box. “Hyung, what are you doing?” Chanyeol asks and his co-worker lifts his head, surprised.
”Oh. I figured your fate was already decided and I was helping you - “ He stops when he see’s Chanyeol’s expression. “You’re not fired? You’re not moving. You’re - “ He groans, his eyes closing. “Don’t even…”
Chanyeol leans forwards to make sure Luhan can hear his next sentence. “Joonmyeon hyung likes me back.”
Chanyeol never thought it’d happen but he was dating Joonmyeon. For two months already, in fact. And Chanyeol’s never been happier. Actually, dating Joonmyeon has made his life ten times more better because right now, he should be working on a transcript that was due the next day but instead, he was sitting in Joonmyeon’s office chair with Joonmyeon himself on his lap.
Chanyeol lets out a deep moan, making Joonmyeon smile against his lips and kiss him again, with more force. Joonmyeon’s hands are raking through Chanyeol’s hair as Chanyeol’s own hands work on untying Joonmyeon’s tie (that Chanyeol had gotten him for their monthiversary).
“Hey, boss, I finished - “ Luhan’s stopped short and he stares wide eyed at the two, dropping the papers. “Jesus Christ, lock the fucking doors at least,” he mutters as his face turns bright red, turning around to shut the door.
“Knock on the door next time,” Chanyeol shoots and Luhan scoffs.
“Don’t think just because you’re dating our boss I won’t fucking kick your ass after we’re off work,” Luhan responds, slamming the door shut.
Chanyeol and Joonmyeon stare at the shut door for a minute before looking back at each other and Joonmyeon laughs and soon, Chanyeol does too and the two of them are in a giggle fit before Chanyeol leans forwards and kisses him again. He thinks he’ll give Joonmyeon a mug that said ‘World’s Best Boyfriend’ this year instead of ‘World’s Best Boss’.
