Intense sunlight filtered through the heavy drapes, piercing the eyelid of a man laying on his back, silk sheets wrapped around his torso while his arms were spread over the bed like an eagle. The man groaned, turning over on his soft sheets and promptly falling asleep, blond hair falling into his eyes until the beeping alarm clock went off just minutes later. He groaned and ran his fingers through his hair, blinking and squinting at the time as he tried to comprehend how time flew as he slept for the little hours that night. He barely had time to think when there was a knock at the front door, the sound of small bare feet thundering towards his bedroom door was the only warning he had before the same door was thrown open. There, in all his onesie glory was his son, curly hair a mess as he smiled widely, looking like a tiny crazed murderer. He hugged his stuffed giraffe to his chest and pointed to the front door, bouncing on the balls of his feet eagerly.

"Daddy! SooSoo hyung is here! Open the door Daddy! Open the door!"

Joonmyun sighed and got up, shivering when his toes made contact with the cold wood of the floor. He felt around for his fluffy slippers, slipping his feet into them once he found them and padded to the front door to welcome the babysitter inside. Even before the young man had even slipped off his shoes, he was tackled down by an over-excited boy who was still in his pyjamas.

"Chanyeol! How are you and Mr Spots this morning hm?"

The man crouched down, smiling widely as the boy babbled about his dream, something involving dragons and princesses. He waved his tiny hands excitedly as he went through the details of his knightly adventure in the dream. Chanyeol was an energetic boy, as expected for a 7 year old boy. He loves his father, his giraffe plush and his babysitter. He was a bright boy with wild hair, a creepy grin and cute little ears that stuck out from over-squashing with beanies, hated brussel sprouts and liked takoyaki as a reward for good behaviour. His father Joonmyun, however, loved his son but spent most of his time working for the company and made sure it was up to standard. But by focusing more on his job after his wife left, Joonmyun had found himself spending less time with his son and didn't even have time to drop him off and pick him up from day care. That was when he hired the baby sitter.

Kyungsoo was a young baby sitter, he preferred being called a carer or a home tutor rather than a nanny or a baby sitter. At 22, he had graduated from college with a degree in education but had a hard time finding suitable work in the area, most of his job offers were from overseas where they needed a teacher that was fluent in both Korean and English. He had declined these offers politely, he wasn't the type of person to leave their family behind in pursuit of a better job. So he struggled to find work until he spotted an e-mail from his agent, asking him if he would like a teaching job where he was paid to teach and mind the child while the parent was away at work. That was how Kyungsoo became Chanyeol's baby sitter-slash-teacher. It had taken much effort and coaxing before the boy opened up to the young man, even a stuff giraffe toy at Kyungsoo's expense and since then, every day was routine.

Kyungsoo would come by the penthouse around 6:15am in the morning every day, ringing the doorbell and shifting the weight of his bag and folder from one arm to the other while he waited for Chanyeol to go wake his father. Joonmyun would drag himself out to the door soon after and let Kyungsoo into the apartment with a yawn, taking his time as he makes his way to the bathroom to refresh himself. Chanyeol would run over with a wide grin and watch Kyungsoo prepare breakfast with the ingredients he would find in the cupboards and fridge.

At 6:30am, Joonmyun would come out in his suit and tie, briefcase in his hand as he quickly downs his breakfast and coffee (black with 2 sugars) that Kyungsoo had neatly set aside while the younger washed up and Chanyeol ate sloppily at the dining table, eyes glued to the morning kids cartoons. He would dash out the door at 6:45am, taking the lift down to the garage to where his Porsche sat and prepared for the early morning snail pace traffic as everyone made their way to work. At the same time, Kyungsoo would have finished his own breakfast and washed up, making sure Chanyeol had cleaned up and changed before they prepared for the first lesson of the morning that started at 9am.

After the morning session, Chanyeol would get a 3 hour lunch break at noon where Kyungsoo would get him to help make their lunch, often sandwiches or packed rice boxes, before they left the apartment. It was an essential part of a child's life to experience the joys of playing outside with other children his age so Kyungsoo had talked to the local school to let Chanyeol come over during the lunch break to play with the other kids. At first Joonmyun was sceptical of the idea but soon he found that Chanyeol was learning faster and was much more happier after attending the lunch breaks with the other students at the school. He instantly became good friends with a group of boys: Jongdae and his older brother, Minseok, and a Chinese student named Zitao. Chanyeol was the epitome of happy that afternoon as he recounted the day to his father over dinner that evening. It was then that Joonmyun had agreed to let Kyungsoo add it to the usual routine.

When the school bell rang for the end of lunch break, Chanyeol would wave goodbye to his friends, shouting about seeing them tomorrow and "remember to watch tonight's episode of Yu-Gi-Oh! Yugi's going to finally duel Pegasus!". With a bounce in his step and a smile on his face, Chanyeol would dance around Kyungsoo as they made their way to the park next to the river, just a short walk from the apartment building. They would unpack the bag that Kyungsoo had carried, laying out the small blanket and happily munching on their lunch while they watched elderly people practice their exercises for their arthritis or the joggers running with their energetic dogs. That day, it was different, Chanyeol had snatched the basket from Kyungsoo’s hands, his tiny hands setting out the food onto the plates and placing them on the small rug. Kyungsoo watched in amusement as Chanyeol tried to shoo the birds and set up at the same time, his child-like mind not able to multitask just yet. When he was done, Chanyeol carefully placed the cutlery and glasses of juice next to the sandwich plates, standing and reaching out his hand like a gentleman.

“Your feast awaits~”

Playing along, Kyungsoo accepted Chanyeol’s hand and sat down at his spot, legs folded neatly underneath him. The young boy placed a napkin over his lap, grinning widely as he went over and did the same once he had sat down. The lunch continued in silence until Kyungsoo’s attention was taken by a man standing over their picnic. He was tall and handsome, a face like a Greek god (probably abs like one too), straight white teeth and a sharp, chiselled jaw. The child could see the way Kyungsoo’s eyes raked over the man with interest, Chanyeol’s lips forming into a pout and a small fire started burning in the pits of his bottomless stomach. He had wanted Kyungsoo all to himself but the tall god-like man had come along and taken away his teacher’s attention. With that, Chanyeol started to try and bring the gaze of his beloved teacher back to himself, he sang, he danced (albeit badly) and even tried to do a handstand.

Unfortunately, he had never really learnt how to do it. It resulted in him toppling over and hurting his elbow. At the cry, Kyungsoo pulled himself from his conversation with the man named Jongdae and rushed over. Big fat droplets of tears ran down Chanyeol’s chubby cheeks as he clutched at his injured elbow, more hurt that Kyungsoo hadn’t paid him any attention rather than the throbbing pain.

“You p-pwomised to only l-l-look at me!” he wailed. “You pwomised! I’m your s-special Channie, you don’t need to look at someone else!”

Kyungsoo cooed softly, calming down the boy before picking him up into his arms. He whispered soft apologies to the boy, humming softly and stroking his hair as he packed up their picnic with one hand. The man named Jong-something had disappeared, probably not wanting to deal with a man with a crying child. The two made their way home quickly, Kyungsoo carrying Chanyeol in his arms like a baby, cradled against the warm chest. Every few steps, Chanyeol would raise his elbow up to the older’s face, pouting and whimpering a soft “my booboo is hurting again”. Every few steps Kyungsoo would place a small kiss on the boy’s elbow, a smile on his lips at how adorable Chanyeol was.

When they reached home, Kyungsoo placed Chanyeol on the sofa and went to get the first aid kit and an ice pack he always kept handy in the freezer next to Chanyeol’s favourite popsicles. Chanyeol whimpered when the ice pack was held against his bruised elbow, the condensing water stinging on the small scratch there. The boy pouted and demanded more kisses to his elbow until it was feeling better, it was only then that he agreed to put on the giraffe band aid that Kyungsoo had held out at the beginning.

“I’ll make it up to you. Your Daddy won’t be home until late tonight so how about we have the rest of the day off? You can show me all of your drawings and you can help make a nice dinner for your Daddy when he gets home. We’ll even eat and watch a movie together. How does that sound, hm?”

Kyungsoo smiled, knowing that he had just appealed to more than half of Chanyeol’s wish list in one go. The sparkle in the other’s eyes as well as the wide smile that pulled across his face was the happiest Kyungsoo had seen the boy all day. Without the pain now and with the promise in mind, Chanyeol tugged Kyungsoo to his bedroom where he pulled out a pile of papers to spread over the floor. Ever since he saw Kyungsoo sketching a picture of his Daddy and him, Chanyeol had tried very hard to learn how to draw. They were just stick figures with their names above their heads but he was still learning, pointing to each one and talking excitedly about them.

“This one is of Daddy and SooSoo hyung and me going to the park! This one is of us at the zoo! And here is one of Daddy staring at SooSoo hyung!”

Rambling on, Kyungsoo listened to each and every story that was behind every drawing, the smile never leaving his face as he placed a kiss on Chanyeol’s forehead.

“They look great Chanyeol. One day you’ll be better than even me at drawing!” he reached to ruffle the boy’s hair gently, “What would you like to help make for dinner tonight?”

“SPAGHETTI AND MEATBALLS!”

Chanyeol jumped up, yelling excitedly and running to the kitchen where he bounced on the balls of his feet, waiting for Kyungsoo to slip on his child’s apron before waddling to the kitchen bench where there was a stool set up just for Chanyeol. Kyungsoo knotted the strings of his frilly apron around his waist securely before setting a pot of water over the stove top to boil. The areas of the kitchen where Chanyeol wasn’t allowed to step in were outlined with red tape, where the oven and the stove were. While the water was boiling, Kyungsoo put together the minced meat and seasoning into a large bowl, helping Chanyeol slip on elbow-length plastic gloves before he dived in, tiny fingers mixing and playing with the squishy meat. Leaving the mixing of the meat and the rolling of the meat balls to Chanyeol, Kyungsoo cooked the spaghetti and drained it off, placing it to the side and getting started on the tomato sauce for the dish. He tested it slightly, adding extra seasoning here and there until it was just right. He scooped up a little of the sauce on a spoon and blew it cool before holding it out to the boy. Chanyeol hummed and nodded, grinning as he held up two meat-covered thumbs. Once the meatballs were ready, they were added into the simmering sauce to cook.

During that time, Kyungsoo got Chanyeol cleaned up and out in the living room to pick out a movie for them to watch. The boy browsed through the Disney collection whilst Kyungsoo started piling the spaghetti onto three plates. The sauce was ready about a minute after Chanyeol came running up with Finding Nemo clutched in his hand. Sauce and meatballs distributed evenly, Kyungsoo grated the cheese on top, lots of cheese for all of them, before he brought the plates over to the living room to be placed on the coffee table. The DVD was inserted and the lights dimmed, Kyungsoo made sure to evenly feed Chanyeol and himself so that both of their plates didn’t go cold. They slurped and chewed the food happily, laughing at points in the movie and Chanyeol finished the plate around the time the baby fishes exclaimed “he touched the butt”. Kyungsoo finished his own plate around the time Nemo got taken. With tummies full and dishes washed, they watched the movie contently, Chanyeol laying happily in Kyungsoo’s lap.

Kyungsoo wasn’t sure when Chanyeol fell asleep but when the credits started rolling, he had realized the boy was fast asleep, a small line of drool running out of the corner of his mouth. The young man carried Chanyeol to his room, the boy sucking on his thumb gently as he was placed into bed, his tiny hands immediately searching for Mr Giraffe. When the toy was safely in his arms, Chanyeol returned to his slumber, a smile tugging on his lips when Kyungsoo placed a soft kiss on his forehead.

“Good night, little man.”

Kyungsoo quietly closed the door, turning around and setting the plate of food into the oven for when Joonmyeon came home. He settled on the couch and flicked on the TV, zooming through the channels in search of something to watch. His eyes started drooping somewhere between a heart surgery and Doctor Who, the last thing that registered in his mind was the sound of a door clicking open.

The next morning was not the usual routine, Kyungsoo did not wake up in his bed, in his room, in his house. However, he had woken up Joonmyun’s bed, in Joonmyun’s house wearing Joonmyun’s shirt. Kyungsoo panicked, did he sleep with his boss? Is he about to lose his job? Instead, there was the smell of frying eggs and the chatter of the TV. What time was it? Kyungsoo snuck out of the bedroom, eyes taking in Chanyeol watching TV quietly on the couch and Joonmyun shirtless and cooking breakfast. This was probably one of Kyungsoo’s weird dreams but when Joonmyun walked past and flicked his forehead, the pain was real, which meant that this was real. Kyungsoo was confused as he sat down to eat, Chanyeol grinning widely.

“Daddy found SooSoo hyung on the couch. I wanted SooSoo hyung to sleep with me in my bed but Daddy said no and let SooSoo hyung sleep in Daddy’s bed. Daddy really likes SooSoo hyung~”

Kyungsoo turned to face the man, his mouth open and eyes staring in shock. Joonmyun smiled over his coffee and took a sip out of his mug. There was two things Kyungsoo could do to give an answer: eat the food, or get up and leave. Having waited for this moment for a while, Kyungsoo bit into a piece of toast and smiled back. Life was only getting better from then.
