There’s a thunderstorm coming, the TV lady said earlier today. Baekhyun had shuddered when she announced, his ears coming to cover eyes because even the images they were showing on TV were unsettling. He hates thunderstorms.

Jongdae’s voice had forced him to peek between his ears, and the sight of his owner’s gentle smile was enough to soothe Baekhyun’s feelings.

“It’s ok,” Jongdae had said as he ruffled the puppy’s hair. “I’ll be right next to you, so don’t worry.”

For a moment, Baekhyun could rest assured. That was until Jongdae’s sister went into labor in the middle or the night and he had to drive her to the hospital. Baekhyun, of course, wasn’t allowed to go. That’s how he ends up alone in Jongdae’s old bedroom that smells faint like Cheetos and fart while there is a ~*storm coming*~.

Normally Baekhyun wouldn’t have to worry about a thunderstorm, not when they’re home and Kyungsoo lives next door just a loud bark away. But here he’s on his own. Not that Jongdae’s family isn’t nice to him -- they are. They all treat Baekhyun like a true family member (they even let him win when they play cards sometimes), but he’d rather stayed the weekend home where he can claw at Kyungsoo’s door and ask for Chanyeol to come sleep with him.

Baekhyun and Chanyeol grew up together. The very same day Jongdae adopted Baekhyun, Kyungsoo showed up with Chanyeol, the puppy too large to be the same age as Baekhyun (it was the fact that he often stumbled that gave his age away). Given the fact that their owners were best friends and neighbors, Baekhyun couldn’t have escaped Chanyeol even if he’d wanted. Especially since Chanyeol started to come to his rescue every time there was a thunderstorm. At first, his excuse for knocking on Jongdae’s door unexpectedly was that Baekhyun’s whines were pitiful, but as time went by and he kept coming even when there wasn’t a thunderstorm at all, Baekhyun understood that Chanyeol just liked to cuddle. It was ok for him, he liked the cuddling -- plus, Chanyeol is really warm.

But the minute the TV lady announced the upcoming thunderstorm, Baekhyun’s stomach clenched in anxiety because Chanyeol is not here to hug his shivers away and shoosh him when he starts crying. He should have insisted on spending the weekend at Kyungsoo’s instead of accompanying Jongdae to his family’s house.

And now he’s here. Face buried in Jongdae’s old Cheetos-smelling pillows as he listens to the heavy rain outside. It’s coming. His body is telling him it’s coming.

When the first thunder drops, the rain is so loud Baekhyun’s own whines get swallowed. He can’t even hear himself. So he cries louder, hoping that someone, anyone would barge in and caress his back. Chanyeol is not here, though. No one is.

Baekhyun is considering turning the loud music on when Jongdae’s ringtone screeches from the bedside table. Careful not to get too unprotected, Baekhyun spares one eye and looks at the cell phone vibrating on the table. Jongdae left in such a hurry that he forgot his phone. Well, that could be him with news from his sister, Baekhyun has to pick up. Except the caller is not from Jongdae’s family. It’s Kyungsoo. He nearly knocks the phone down in his haste to grab the device and slide the answer option.

“Hello?” Baekhyun cries.

The voice he hears works like magic to his ears. “Baek? It’s me,” says Chanyeol. He’s whispering, and Baekhyun’s tail wiggles in happiness. It’s so good to hear his voice. “I stole Kyungsoo’s phone when he wasn’t looking. There is a thunderstorm.”

“I know,” Baekhyun says. A particularly mean thunder drops and he whines, ears pressing to the side of his head in a pathetic attempt to turn deaf. “I’m alone. Jongdae had to leave…”

“You’re alone?” Chanyeol’s loud voice booms with thunders as background. Baekhyun shuts his eyes closed. “I’m sorry Baek, I’m sorry.”

“I’m scared.”

“Get under the blankets, I’ll talk to you until you fall asleep.”

Baekhyun’s heart is beating fast, but the funny thing is that while he focuses on Chanyeol’s voice, he can’t really hear the mean, awful, really bad thunders dropping everywhere and threatening his life. He sniffs, nodding -- foolishly because Chanyeol can’t see him nod, but he obeys anyway. Once he’s safely under two layers of Jongdae’s smelly blankets, he sighs.

“Are you ready?” Chanyeol asks. Baekhyun doesn’t answer, but Chanyeol knows he’s listening. He keeps talking. “Today was a good day. I had cookies for breakfast and Kyungsoo brought fried chicken home. Jongin was really happy and he kept purring and licking his fingers. I think I like him better now.”

As Chanyeol’s laughs loudly, Baekhyun’s mind travels to a world where Kyungsoo’s new pet is Chanyeol’s best friend and Baekhyun is forgotten, dirty and alone inside a cardboard box in a shady street corner. Chanyeol used to hate Jongin because the cat kept sleeping in his bed and making his sneeze with all the fur. Now he likes him. They’re there. Together. Meanwhile, Baekhyun is alone several miles away in the middle of a thunderstorm. (Again) Alone.

He whines, tears flooding his eyes and the prospect of Chanyeol liking Jongin more than he likes Baekhyun haunting his thoughts.

“What is it, Baek?” the other sounds worried.

How to express himself without sounding stupid? Baekhyun wraps his tail around himself and says, “Were you having fun with Jongin?”

Chanyeol goes silent for a minute, but soon enough his voice is soothing Baekhyun’s senses again. “It’s only fun if you’re around, Baekhyun-ah.”

Baekhyun is glad Chanyeol can’t watch his entire face turning red. He has to bite on his lower lip to prevent giggling. That’s exactly what he wanted to hear.

“Are you feeling better, Baekhyunnie?” he asks. Amazingly, Baekhyun is feeling better, so he closes his eyes and inhales, getting a little more comfortable on Jongdae’s bed.

“Will you sing for me?”

Once, when they were still too young to be cool, Chanyeol wrote a song about two puppy boys. In the song, one of them is afraid of thunders and lightnings, but when they’re together it’s like nothing can hit him.

Chanyeol sings him to sleep, and when Baekhyun wakes up the next morning with Jongdae’s phone resting on his belly, he feels safe and sound. The thunderstorm is gone.

~*~

They must have known Jongdae and Baekhyun were coming home, because as soon as they step out of the elevator, Kyungsoo is waiting by his door with an excited Chanyeol by his side, bouncing on his feet and tail moving desperately. His eyes sparkle when he shouts Baekhyun’s name. He doesn’t have time to stretch his arms for a hug before Baekhyun is jumping him. By the way Chanyeol’s eyes widen and his ears amusingly up, he wasn’t expecting to be kissed full on the mouth.

“We’re can’t separate,” Baekhyun states after he sits back on Chanyeol’s legs, allowing the taller one to sit up (albeit a little lost). “Ever.”

Jongdae and Kyungsoo share glances and Jongdae says, “Seems like we’ll have to move in together.”
