Solarium Rules in Force
by Ashley Gardiner
February 01, 2008 12:00am
TOUGH new rules clamping down on the solarium industry come into effect in Victoria today.
Unscrupulous solariums that flout the rules face fines of up to $1 million.
The changes follow the death of Clare Oliver, 26, last year from melanoma.
Ms Oliver died in September last year after spending her final weeks warning of the dangers of solariums, which she blamed for causing her skin cancer.
From today, solariums must display health warnings and perform skin assessments before a customer can use their facilities.
Those aged 15 or under are completely banned, while those aged 16 or 17 must have parental permission.
Solariums will also have to be licensed, with the penalty almost $1 million.
Operators who fail to comply with licence conditions can be fined up to $660,000.
Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre oncologist Grant McArthur, who treated Ms Oliver, said the rules were an important start in reducing the impact of solarium use by increasing awareness.
"One has to be still somewhat sceptical about the ability of the industry to adhere to these regulations," he said.
Associate Professor McArthur called for more public education, to be paid for by the State Government, and also for a solarium advertising ban.
