some teardrops this fine evening

May 20, 2006 23:37

it has been raining for 3 weeks
usually it's too hot to move
this place that is found on sideroads
with the main artery stretching though
that connects toronto to lake huron
it's dying and there is nothing we can do
the third largest aging population in canada
one of every two young people leave
and over half of them say they would come back
but there is nothing here
no opportunities, no futures
fields that get turned over to weeds or big business
store fronts cover with dust and newspaper
due to lack of population and that new walmart up the highway
everyone talks about growth and expansion
how their towns never look the same because of the new buildings
here it is a poplar opposite
it always looks pretty much the same
save for whatever business died out
or building that has been boarded up or torn down
and i must say it is kind of crushing to know
that it is not that realistic to think
that i will be able to live my life here
it is too foolish to stay
and too heart breaking to leave
so many of us have already left,
not coming home for the summer
or getting that 'good' job in the city
we are left to be wandering souls
traveling place to place searching
for that sense of community
for a village like the one that raised us
as we are forced out into a world
where we are faceless, nameless,
where our history is unknown
and all we can do in the midst of it all
is bite the bullet and walk away

(at least spell check doesn't recognize walmart as a word)
