"Funny, thinks Milton, Power, Time, Gravity, Love. The forces that really kick ass are all invisible."
~ David Mitchell, in Cloud Atlas
(my current read)
It's April. My year of self-improvement has so far accomplished only overcoming biting my fingernails. For this first time in my life, I have nails with length to speak of. It's rather awkward getting accustomed to them, but it comes with a sense of pride, and reinforces will.
I've learned that there is a difference between wanting to do something, and being determined to do something. When you want to do something, often you similultaneously want to do just the opposite. For example, a smoker wants to quit smoking, but they also maintain the desire to smoke. I want to be able to climb three flights of stairs without being winded, but I also want to sleep in every morning instead of waking up to work out. To be determined allows you to overcompensate the lesser want, at any cost. It's hard to find the drive when there are contradictory forces at work, allowing us to make excuses. But to be determined, that is the source of success.
