When the last eagle flies over the last crumbling
mountain, and the last lion roars at the last dusty fountain
in the shadow of the forest though she may be old and worn
they will stare unbelieving at the last unicorn.

Good Thought for the Day
Even when things don't go as you hope, that doesn't make the experience a
bad one. Find the good in it and learn from it.

"But now, it is not as a woman descended from noble ancestry,
but as one of the people that I am avenging lost freedom, my scourged body,
the outraged chastity of my daughters. Roman lust has gone so far that not
our very person, nor even age or virginity, are left unpolluted. But heaven
is on the side of a righteous vengeance; a legion which dared to fight has
perished; the rest are hiding themselves in their camp, or are thinking anxiously
of flight. They will not sustain even the din and the shout of so many thousands,
much less our charge and our blows. If you weigh well the strength of the
armies, and the causes of the war, you will see that in this battle you must
conquer or die. This is a woman's resolve; as for men, they may live and
be slaves."
Boudicca - Queen of the Iceni c. 60 AD

Literature
Thou rememberest
Since once I sat upon a promontory,
And heard a mermaid on a dolphins back
Uttering such dulcet and harmonious breath,
That the rude sea grew civil at her song;
And certain stars shot madly from their spheres (5),
To hear the sea-maids music.
William Shakespeare - A Midsummer Night's Dream - 1592
Lyrics
"You may think you see who I really am
But you'll never know me
Every day, It's as if I play a part
Now I see, If I wear a mask I can fool the world
But I cannot fool my heart

We now return you to the regularly scheduled rambling LJ entry for the
day......
Part of this was going to be about swashbucklers ala
Highlander and the rest about where the mermaids stand, but when I started
to write it, I got to thinking about a few things.
The film, Highlander, is one of the best examples of editing
out there. The fade between the lake and the aquarium is a perfect example
of what I mean. While I like the series and Adrian Paul, I think the
first movie should have stood alone. The director's cut is better, it explains
a couple of things the version shown in the US, like how Rachel fits
into Conner MacLeod's life. It's one of those rare got it all films.
The story is good, the location shots are breathtaking, the actors fit the
parts, and the soundtrack will blow your doors off. That's the big thing
that was missing from Highlander III and Highlander: Endgame, Princes
of the Universe. The inspiration? Believe it or not, according Highlander
creator, Greg Weiden, it was the collection of armor and weapons in the Tower
of London.
A couple years back, I was RPing a Highlander immortal
with a group on AOL. If anyone is wondering about today's quote from Boudicca,
that's how it fits. The immortal I had played had what they call "first death"
circa 60 A.D. in the battle against the Romans that were invading what is
now the United Kingdom. I was reading some of those old stories recently
and realized that when writing I tend to delve into the history surrounding
whatever time period I'm writing about. I never really thought about it at
length until I started writing in a Prohibition Era scenario.
Now, there's a nagging little voice in my head that sounds
like Emily Litella that is saying.... "What's all this fuss about memaids?"
Some time ago, Babara Bush, then First Lady, made a
speech at Wellesley College . There was a big tadoo over her giving the
commencement speech back in 1990.
While I'm not an advocate of the Republican or Democratic
parties, there are lot of things I have in common with this lady. I'm a mother,
while not a claim to fame, being a parent regardless of gender is no easy
job. Yes, job, J-O-B, full time, no pay. I love dogs as evidenced by the
wonderful furball that is often the bright in my day.
Mostly though, I want to know where the mermaids stand.
In her speech at Wellesley, Mrs. Bush relates a story by Robert Fulghum.
None of us fit into the same mold as another person. We are ourselves,
individuals, no one else is who or what we are. It matters not if the person
is a sibling or an offspring, we are unique.
