I've never spent so much time on non-schoolwork before. We, the Pro-Life Alliance, are doing everything we can to stop
Jack Kevorkian from coming to UF. It's easy to lose hope, considering what a prick the chairman of our speaker's bureau is.
Here are some quotes of his, with my commentary in bold.
"We figure that this will be a great way to engage our student body and entertain," said Blank about Kevorkian's upcoming appearance. "We do understand that this will spark controversy. And that is something we have done in the past." Oprah Winfrey is an engaging entertainer. Jon Stewart is an engaging entertainer. Jack Kevorkian is a convicted killer. Maybe we should invite the Unabomber to come entertain us next year. I hear he's been working on his juggling routine.
...
When asked whether or not ACCENT was concerned about giving a public platform to a convicted murderer, Blank said that ACCENT was not necessarily advocating Kevorkian's opinions: "We pride ourselves on being non-partisan. We try not to take any one point of view." Common sense tells me it's dangerous to be open-minded about murderers.
...
"We aren't bringing him in to try to convince people of his views but to engage the student body and they can choose for themselves," said Blank. He also said that ACCENT believed that by adding Kevorkian to the roster of speakers, they would be adding a positive "diversity" to the speaker lineup. Blank, however, would not directly respond to a question about whether or not ACCENT would invite a racist speaker to speak to increase "diversity", responding that, "Each speaker is taken on a case by case basis." Choose for themselves between what? Lethal injection and carbon-monoxide poisoning? Steven Blank is just as bad as Kevorkian; neither of them provide a better solution to suffering than death. What about treatment? What about hospice? What about dignity?
That being said, the support that we have already received from certain student groups is encouraging. More updates as more progress is made.
