I'd never really thought about why Leon became a cop, but I can definitely see it happening this way. I recall that he was a lousy student as a kid, but I can see an incident like this giving him the motivation to become a cop and the determination to succeed. When you think about it, he's already a full detective in his early twenties, so he must have risen up through the ranks pretty quickly.

Violence had come knocking on his front door. And by God, he was going to knock back.

Leon was kind of young in the series, especially to be a detective so I figured he must have had some serious motivation. Since there is so little background on him (or any other regular character, for that matter) it leaves a lot of room for the imagination.
