“What the hell?”

Dean tapped the flickering light above the kitchen sink.

“Looks like it’s burning out,” Lisa sighed. “Nothing lasts forever. Could you pick up some bulbs on your way home from work?”

Numbly, Dean stared at the light. His skin prickled as the hairs of his arms stood on end.

“Dean?”

“Uh, yeah,” he mumbled. “No problem. Look, babe, I gotta go or I’ll be late.”

He kissed her on the cheek then high-tailed it out of there.

The early autumn sunshine felt good on his face as he stumbled to the Impala. He slid behind the wheel, slammed the door. His hands shook as he keyed the ignition.

He knew the signs of spiritual activity better than most. Flickering lights. Cold spots. These signs and more had been popping up over the past few weeks with alarming frequency. He heard things. Saw shadows. At first he blamed faulty electric wiring or drafts. Refusing to believe what his instincts and a lifetime of training was telling him.

“This ain’t happening,” he whispered fiercely.

But it was.

***

He didn’t know what woke him up. Sweat slicked his skin and his heart thundered in his chest. Was it a dream? Had he screamed? A quick glance at his wife, still sound asleep, told him that he had not.

Carefully, he threw back the covers and padded across the room, bare feet making no noise on the carpet. He checked on Ben, but the boy was out like a light. A quick tour around the house confirmed that the windows and doors were secured.

Dean took his responsibilities to his new family seriously. After all, he had made a promise to Sam. Barbeques and football games. The normal, apple pie life he had always wanted.

It had been the hardest promise he had ever made - the hardest he had ever kept. But he had done it out of love.

Shaking his head, Dean went to the bathroom, flicked on the light. He twisted the faucet to hot and splashed water into his face before drying it with a towel. The rising steam soon fogged the mirror. With a sigh, he swiped the palm of his hand along the smooth surface... and nearly jumped out of his skin when he saw the familiar face staring back at him.

He whirled.

No one was there.

Turning back to the mirror, he saw his brother’s (ghost? reflection?) smiling sadly at him.

“Y-you…” Dean swallowed. “Sammy, you’re not supposed to be here.”

“I know.” Sam replied quietly. “But I’m here just the same… or I will be.”

“How? I don’t understand-”

“Nothing lasts forever, Dean.”

The apparition -hallucination, whatever - faded away, if it indeed had been there in the first place. But the words lingered.

His brother was coming back.

Dean didn’t know how or when or even why. But Sam was going to come back to him.

For some reason he couldn’t fathom, that idea thrilled and terrified him at the same time.
