I think I just realized what everyone hates about Renee Zellweger. Not only does she seem like a regular person trying to reach beyond her "proper place", all of her roles (well, all the ones I can think of) mirror that!
1) Chicago - she plays a woman married to a mechanic who idolizes a jazz killer and devotes all of her energy to making it big herself
2) Bridget Jones's Diary - a woman in a slump who embarks on a self-improvement plan
3) Jerry Maguire - a woman in love with a man everyone recognizes as being out of her league
4) Down with Love - a plain-jane secretary who goes to absolutely ridiculous lengths to attract the attention of her former boss, a hot, successful, famous writer
She's hungry, ambitious, willing to do whatever it takes to make people like her. The ordinary person desperate to become famous. I don't actually think that she is more like this than the average Hollywood actor, but for some reason others seem to be able to hide it better. We just don't want to see that in our leading starlets--it spoils the fantasy. Right now it seems we're in favor of the aristocratic beauty (the Gwenyth/Nicole/Angelina model) or the vivacious girl-next-door (the Julia/Sandra/Cameron model). Renee is, of course, more relatable for most women than all of those other actresses. But I think she's just a little close too home for most people to really like her.
