This is a post that only fellow Des Moines-ers will really appreciate.
The Science Center of Iowa is a children's science museum in Des Moines that used to be located a few blocks from my current apartment but moved downtown a couple of years ago. The other day I decided to stop at the old site on my run, mostly because I was curious about what the building was being used for now. The building is probably a third of a mile or so back off Grand Avenue, along a little windy road, and as I ran down the back road, I passed multiple signs like the one above. This gave me plenty of time (as I am a slow runner) to wonder what the building was being used for now.
By the time I actually got there, I had decided that the building could be converted into a really awesome creative media/design studio without too much work. The ticket window could be made into a receptionist's area, and the planetarium could be used for hosting tech seminars or for presenting ideas to important clients. There were plenty of rooms for various offices, and they could leave the hole in the floor where the Foucault Pendulum used to be to open the space up. Plus, the location was perfect. Right off of Grand by the Art Center and Polk, close to both the freeway and downtown.
And then when I got there, this is what I found:
It's been vacant for two years. It has fallen into disrepair. There is something amazingly creepy about a deserted children's museum.
Looking at it, I forgot about the creative design firm and thought, If I was in high school, this would be a great place to come smoke.
I walked around the building, and saw that others have had this idea already.
I like that last one. Oh, drugs.
