Tuesday I participated in an experiment Joe was running. He is looking to see the brain waves formed when a person is looking at colored circles on a screen. Sounds interesting right? So here is a picture:
Basically the first hour of the experiment Joe and his cute assistant are putting a cap on my head that has about 60 electrodes. Each electrode gets a little electrode gel and is tested to make sure the impedance is low enough to get a good signal. I'm then transported to experiment chamber which is basically a small room with some sound dampening walls and a computer screen in front of me. The next full hour or two (with plenty of short breaks) is spent watching circles on the screen appear for a brief second. If one of the circles is green I push one button, if they are all red I push another. Wow, this fun... the consent form did indicate the testing was boring.
The highlight of the experiment was after they removed the electrode cap, Joe washed my hair to get the gel out. It was like I was in a salon.
