New topic - still depressing

Today I interviewed three candidates for a programming position in my research group, to assist in coding the PIER and PHI projects. The money for the programmer has existed for almost a year now, but the professors finally got around to going through the resumes and selected a few for interviews.

All three candidates were obviously qualified; the professors would not have selected them for interviews otherwise. I was impressed with all of them, but what really impacted me the most by the end was that we would be saying no to two of them. Only two of the three currently have jobs, so at least one of them would remain unemployed.

Maybe in my current state I'm more prone to feeling bad for others, but I really hate the fact that these individuals, who are educated, work hard, motivated, etc. are unemployed. I could tell they really wanted the job, and to some extent, they didn't care what the job was, they wanted to work.

I hate being in a position of choosing (more precisely assisting in the choice of) which one we hire. I already feel bad for the ones we may not.
