The population of Storybrooke doesn’t like Rumplestiltskin; truthfully the only reason they haven’t run him out of town yet is his little boy Bae. Desperate to feed his son, Rumple attempts to earn more money by turning to prostitution, but with the townspeople’s attitude towards him and the size of the town, there’s only so much he can scramble. That is not to say he doesn’t have regulars. The people of Storybrooke can be divided into two groups: those who cross the street just to avoid looking at him, and those who welcome an excuse to abuse him. The latter ones take his desperation to mean that for a few dollars they can top the regular humiliation and the slurs with extra ferocious beatings and sexual service. Still, Rumple takes what he can get and does his best to not dwell on how pitiful his life is.
Then one day, Belle French comes back into town after years at uni. Having grown up outside, she feels lonely and in need of someone to talk with. By a strange coincidence, she employs Rumple for an evening, surprising him that indeed polite conversation is her only intent. Belle enjoys his company so much, she becomes one of his regulars; though only in name. There is nothing she has in common with those vile people who pay to watch him suffer and Rumple is secretly looking forward to every moment spent with the lovely woman. Just so he can soak up her kindness and survive another day.
