Crossposting from tumblr bc shit happens and I want this saved.
Here is the original.

these two gifsets
@basmathgirl and I started talking about Donna and Dean being similar. Or more like, I started talking since
@basmathgirl hasn’t watched SPN and I am a sucker for crossovers and characters with low self esteem… *shifty eyes*
How are Dean and Donna alike?
- they both grew up under a strict, criticizing parent that rarely showed affection (Donna’s mother Sylvia and Dean’s father John)
- they both have another relative that is a generation older and is warm and supportive and just wants them to be happy (Wilf for Donna and Bobby for Dean; yes I’m using the relative part loosely here but you can’t argue they’re not family plus Bobby was better father to the boys that John ever was)
- both think they’re worthless and stupid, don’t see how bright they are, how creative and resourceful (I’m thinking about Dean building his own EMF meter from an old walk-man specifically here)
- they are both told multiple times they are wrong / it is questioned how they can think so little of themselves (Castiel in particular, in Lazarus Rising; and the Doctor….like, all the time)
- both are willing to do the right thing and sacrifice themselves
- both care deeply for their loved ones (and take good care of them, for example feeding them)
- both saved the world! both multiple times
- both present a ‘shallow’ exterior: Donna as the gossip girl and Dean chasing after one night stands, for instance, also being loud and ‘screaming at the world’, and TenToo put it; and use these masks to protect themselves
- both take criticism to heart and are easily wounded even if they don’t always show it
- both are passionate about literature (Dean reads and clearly has his favorites, Kurt Vonnegut comes to mind, Donna as well - she clearly has knowledge of Agatha Christie’s works when she meets her so that meeting didn’t inspire her interest)
- they both need love and cuddles and hot cocoa
- I love them both!
Also you will hopefully notice Dean’s similarities to the Doctor as well, mainly the fact that they suffer so prettily *evil laugh*
Anyhoo!
I promised a rec list, and here it is! The requirements set by
@basmathgirl were as follows:
‘Anything that can get me to like and understand Dean with his insecurities would be fine’

I think this could be a good place to start for you. You get to see flashback to Dean’s (and Sammy’s) childhood, how their father was like and what expected of him. I’m warning you, John is not winning any father of the year awards! You get to see some brotherly feels and Dean’s guilt and flashes of ‘I always screw everything up, I’m no good…’ thing. Also the Striga is super cool.
Supernatural S02E01 In My Time of Dying
The Winchesters have been in a car crash when running from the Demon they’ve been hunting and they are all hurt but Dean most of all. As I said in
this post (more spoilers there!), I have lots of warm fuzzy feelings about spirit!Dean wandering the corridors of a hospital, all in white, desperate to communicate but unable to, as nobody can see him. And that leads to a fantastic (for me) opportunity, for Dean to watch, with no filter, the actual reactions his family has to his state / possibility of death. He sees that Sammy cares and is doing something, maybe it’s not much but still, that conversation on the floor was so adorable…. meanwhile John just ….doesn’t do shit. Can you imagine the betrayal the ‘all my life I have done everything you asked and now you can’t be even bothered to call your contacts for help?!’ and it is so heartfelt when he yells at John… and then John dumps even more crap on Dean’s lap, like good father that he is /sarcasm.
Supernatural S02E14 Born Under a Bad Sign
This ep shows you just how much Dean loves his brother and how far he’s willing to go for him. Turns out Sammy did something bad, really bad and as they investigate the mystery, notice how Dean is always on Sam’s side, is the first one to find an excuse or a reason for what he did even if he himself can’t understand it. Bonus: another take on Dean feeling like he keeps letting people down.
Supernatural S04E02 Are You There God It’s Me Dean Winchester
Here we have Dean, freshly pulled from Hell (yes, dear, literal Hell, down below, with fire and demon rape and meat hooks….. ‘good times!’ - to quote Dean) by a yet unknown someone, speculation going on if maybe god actually exists and was behind that. This leads to Dean’s rant and confusion along the lines of ‘why would god give a crap about a low life like me?’
Supernatural S04E06 Yellow Fever
Our poor Dean is struck with a supernatural sickness that causes him to be scared…. of everything and hallucinating and having no shield of bravado and bullshit that he so often uses. Pure whump and joy and a bit funny, I admit that. Doctor should catch this sickness, methinks *drops a plot bunny on your lap* hmm? *whistles*
Supernatural S05E16 Dark Side of the Moon
I have to include this ep, it’s relevant here it’s just SO. FUCKING.PAINFUL *sobs and wails in a corner* it’s so sad and heart-wrenching I never dare re-watch it, maybe except for that first scene in a motel, which coincidentally is also my favorite Sam’s death scene. Yes, in this fandom you can pick your favorite death scene for a character, they die so often. A bit like Doctor Who, actually, lol (though usually more gruesome).
moving on!!!!
Supernatural S07E02 Hello Cruel World
I don’t know what to tell you, I just love this one. For the purpose of this list, I just want you to watch some awesome protective Dean, while Sammy has problems deciding what’s real and what’s a hallucination. Especially the scene in the warehouse, extra yummy angsty!
Supernatural S07E04 Defending Your Life
So in a previous episode Dean killed Sammy’s old friend (named Amy Pond btw, YES!) who was a monster and stuff but wasn’t really a bad monster, you know? *rambles* And Dean did it after he’d promised Sammy that he wouldn’t. In this episode, you will see lots of angst and guilt, which are sort of normal for Dean in general, let’s be real but this time there’s a …somebody (won’t spoil it for you) that will use it against them. Just your basic Dean angst fest with a protective Sammy to the rescue! And some funny parts too, despite all that.
Supernatural S07E07 The Mentalists
This ep is a continuation of the previous rec. The brothers patch up their differences and there’s a spoon-bender that’s funny and that’s pretty much it?
Supernatural S07E20 The Girl with the Dungeons and Dragons Tattoo
Because you HAVE to meet Charlie! If you skip all the previous recs, this is what you need to watch. Charlie is awesome and she’s genius and we love that ginger ray of sunshine!
Bonus is that you get introduced to the overall plot for the season through her character. (I totally intend to do a SuperWho crossover with Charlie, YES!)
and these are some more eps with her:
Supernatural S08E11 LARP and the Real Girl
Not only is Charlie a Queen, there’s a very funny investigation going on.
Supernatural S08E20 Pac-Man Fever
More of Charlie’s backstory.
Supernatural S09E04 Slumber Party
Charlie and the boys meet Dorothy, you know, the one that went to Oz. Yup!
There’s plenty more but let’s just start small yeah?
Originally posted by itsokaysammy Oh and this gorgeous lady is Rowena - a cunning powerful witch with a glorious Scottish accent. Just so you know. My favorite episodes with her are:
Supernatural S10E14 The Executioner’s Song
Supernatural S10E19 The Werther Project
If you’d like you can watch these episodes just for her snark and fashion sense, ignoring the plot completely. I’d understand. I grew to love her, despite her being…. less than a loving mother. But we share some things too:
I think I better stop now.
I do expect you to report to me with your mission progress so we can chat and all.
