I could really go for a nice summer thunderstorm right now. You know the kind where it has been muggy all day and the rain just starts falling. And it doesn't matter if you are inside or out because it feels so nice to cool down either way. The feeling of being caught in something so dangerous and yet still feeling so safe. The best thunderstorms of all time are at the beach. When you are actually on the beach and it starts to pour. Everyone gets up to leave, including any nasty bugs, and it is just you on the beach watching the waves. That is the time when you can just stand in one spot and lose your mind to thought. The waves also are rolling in rough with the white peaks and if you get close enough you get sprayed lightly with the salty water. The sand sticking to your feet and the bottom of your pant legs. The kind of rain where you need a sweatshirt because it gets chilly but wouldn't dare wear a raincoat because that would just taint the experience.
Then you walk back to the beach house and sit on the front screened in porch still wearing the wet jeans and sweatshirt. Everyone in the family is inside probably putting kids to sleep or fixing some lunch. You know everyone is happy and peaceful. I can imagine how the lighting is dim and how the couch that lives permantley outside and has a tint of mildew smell. Even though the house is a block away from the ocean you can still faintly hear the rhythmic rolling tide. And that makes me want to grab a great book and curl up to read till the storm stops.
But for now I will have to settle with going to stand in the indoor arena at McDonough school and watch Emily's lesson for the last time before rushing back here and getting the rest of the plastic off the oven racks.
I could really also go for some pan fried scallops in a butter garlic sauce over some angel hair pasta. Maybe a nice light cream sauce too? Ohhh...
