I've heard it said that people fit some places over others. Or maybe it's that places fit people. The Shenandoah River and the Appalachians are my backbone and spinal cord, but the Pacific Northwest still takes my breath away. One of my favorite trips of the past two years was the drive on the Pacific Coast Highway from San Diego to the tip of Oregon ... simply stunning and gets more and more beautiful as you go. Thing is, I've got so much political capital invested in this county where I teach, it's a national top-10 county, the Washington policy makers are so close, and I really really really do want to make a difference in public education, but ... there's such a huge part of me that wants to move to Gold Beach, Oregon where the school population is right around 100, if that, where the rivers pour into the Pacific Ocean, where the ocean waves beat the rocky shore with both ferocity and grandeur, and where when people ask you what you do, they don't mean what do you do for a living; they mean what do you do for you.
