I put an offer on a house, an offer that was accepted and is probably ratified by now. Basically, I'm out $5000 if I back out now--unless I can't get Direct TV's required degree angle to the Southern sky (for the NFL ticket), which will render the contract null and void. Yes, that is grounds for voiding the contract. Amazing huh?
Even more amazing is the fact that on August 23, I will be spending almost $20 a cubic foot for air (yes, air). It's a condo, so I only own the space within the walls. I own expensive air. Expensive air with an unobstructed 45 degree angle of the Southern sky, or I don't own it.
And with the interest on the $20 a cubic foot I'm borrowing, I figure it's going to cost me a quarter for every breath I take for the rest of my life.
Somehow with one signature, I have become so very American, so very grown up, so very traditional, so very rooted, so very materialistic, so much an ... an owner. I am not bragging.
So why exactly did the pictures my friend sent today of Mt. Rainier (she's out there climbing this month) stab so hard at my gut?
