Saturday evening I went to a Movie Night hosted by Mike, one of my fellow
NYC Browncoats. We had decided on the list to see these three Westerns:
Stage Coach
Seven Men From Now
Once Upon A Time In The West
I got there around the appointed time of 6 pm. We did the shindig thing until a bit after 7 as most folks had arrived by then. We then started OUATITW. In the very first scene, a few Browncoats started in with the MST3K-type talkbacks...I mean they were loud too. I figured it would die down after a short time, but no such luck. A cool Browncoat couple that I met that night for the first time, Scott and Diane, couldn't deal with it & left less than an hour into the film. I really can't say as I blame them. I had brought OUATITW and chose to stick it out. About halfway into the 165-minute film, Mike asked us if we wanted to take a break to use the restroom/get a beverage/etc. We agreed. After a somewhat lengthy break I asked Mike to figure out what was going to happen next. He asked if folks wanted to finish the film & some folks said no so we didn't watch any more movies. Now I wouldn't have a problem with this behavior except that it was advertised for weeks as a MOVIE NIGHT and the list of films was posted by Mike, whereupon he asked if anyone had objections. No one said they did. It was clear that a few people took it upon themselves to ruin the film for everyone else.
One would think that Browncoats would want to actually watch a Western that is not only one of Joss Whedon's all-time favorite films but is also in some respects a clear influence on him in his creation of the 'verse. I suppose that one would be wrong. *sigh*
A New Jersey member of the list has proposed hosting a Movie Night in March. I'll have to find out if it's going to be another night dominated by MST3K-wannabes...because if so then I have zero interest in driving down for that.
