Haven't had a rant about music for a while, so here goes:
Reading the link that
Scott put up on his lj, to a blog on Myspace where Cahir from FWW/JPL moans about the current state of the UK scene, and how it is full of bands with attitude and shit songs. He follows this up with how FWW have split from their management and Agent due to them not putting the music first. Several other notable names from the UK indie (as in, Independant, not Oasis) scene have said things along these lines. Beecher quoted this as a reason the broke up. Mcklusy also said it. I have to say, IMO, What a Pile of Shit. Like the UK scene was once full of artists who kept their mouths shut and just made amazing music. If you ask me, the shit thickens as you rise to the top. FWW are getting bigger (big enough to need 'management', whatever the hell that means), and older, and all they see are the little kiddie pop bands who get put on to support them. Like Flood of fRed, who supported them recently.
Little anecdote about that BTW: FOfR are a horrible, styled, MTVmo manufactured cliche who do a lot of the bigger alternative gigs. They supported Thrice, f'rinstance. However, they are doing a good job of getting what they want: popularity and Merch sales. So fair play to them. Plus, they are energetic and friendly. Now FWW come on after them and in between songs, Cahir starts slagging off 'haircut emo tight trouser bands'. i.e. Flood of fRed. Now, thats just rude if you ask me. I'm the last to defend a band like FOfR for their aesthetic and ethics. But not only was Cahir rude enough to not listen to them, or if he did, to slag them on stage.
I suggest that FWW need to try the real underground, where things are lively and inventive, and where you won't meet bands who have attitudes like the shitty signed pieces of shit Cahir is referring to, and where people still care. Probably similar to the underground Cahir came from. But also, he wouldn't get the return to play full UK tours, and all the other benefits that selling out a little bring. You make your choices, you get your returns
