i did it! i finished the ontological section. phew. i think it is ok.
and then stuff i thought would go there ended up wanting to be in the next section (which is the one i had already written). so i went and added it there.
my concerns:
1. there are all sorts of limitations in the research as it has been done that relate to things i've done well
and
directions for future research that have been suggested that my research has actually addressed
and
they are scattered all over the place in this chapter. don't they need to be in one place, somewhere? where?
i think i might do something like say, 'throughout this chapter we have identified limitations that i and other researchers have identified (whatever, it is 2:30am, i'll write it right later). these include.... in addition, researchers have suggested future directions for research on parental beliefs that include.... ' and then talk about how my research addresses those issues. maybe that actually goes in implications/conclusions rather than broadening the context...? i'm not 100% certain... but it makes sense to talk about the contributions there as well as the limitations.
2. i just listed out some limitations of the current literature, and then later in that section i kind of talk about limitations and address them with other studies, and i don't know that i've written them in anything remotely like a parallel fashion. i think i'll just wait to read the chapter out loud and that should be relatively easy to fix.
so tomorrow: write up the last two sections, which are kind of hard because they involve more thinking about MY work that i haven't done so much yet. like, how are the words enacted on the families based on my 'process' chapter about the irvines? what can i say there that will be insightful and deep... i can talk about unidirectionality vs multidirectionality... (eg lilly's story of the kids revolting against the TV) of course there are points of similarity and points of difference... but that's obvious. but then again, things that are interesting:
-that the kids are so thoughtful and have a lot to say, and that suggests that looking more closely at the interrelations is important
-the kids know a lot about the war--as do kids of the other families, regardless of their mothers' approaches--seems like the kids know more if they CARE more... that would take a different analysis... but should i have done that analysis? maybe this isn't a good direction to go.
well, i'll think about it more tomorrow. when i shall COMPLETE this chapter.
after today's writing i KNOW i can do the rest of the chapter tomorrow. !!!
