My life during weeks 11, 12, and 13

На уроках финского я выступил с рассказами о Канаде и о Владимире Высоцком. Я начал подавать заявки на новые учебные программы, поскольку у меня все еще нет работы.

During the three past weeks the course continued as usual. In grammar we studied infinitive 3, the passive and participles.

Last Friday we wrote a grammar test, which, as the teacher says, corresponds to the middle level of the YKI-test. My result is quite good (80%), but I suspect that the real test, which I am going to take in a few days, will be more difficult.

The teacher also asked us to prepare speeches about our home countries and favourite personalities. I spoke about Canada/Québec and Vladimir Vysotsky.

For my speeches I brought some artefacts to the class. For the Canada speech I brought a map and Canadian banknotes. As for Vysotsky, I showed an extract from the film “Two Comrades Were Serving”, where Vysotsky acts as a White officer, and played extracts from two songs.

The teacher got especially interested in Vysotsky, because his songs (in Finnish translations) are known in Finland. The next day she brought to the class the lyrics of Ystavän laulu (see my previous post). I had a recording only in Swedish, so we sang in Finnish together with the Swedish singer.

We also wrote texts on given subjects. I wrote on the topic “Internet or a book?” and about a favourite film (Bergman’s Summer with Monica).

On my own I read all texts and dialogues from the textbook Kuulosta hyvältä and started to read the grammar notes, do exercises and watch the videos of the lessons.

One Saturday I went to Helsinki, because I had got an offer of a cleaning job. I left it almost immediately - that was not what I wanted to do and the job was offered private person, not a company. The round trip cost 16 euros and took most of the day. I also asked for a job in groceries in Karis, but they did not have anything.

I have applied for three vocational programmes in Finland that will start in September. I am going to apply for more programmes, because I must be sure that I get a study place.

I'd prefer to work, but I think that finding a job in the present circumstances (my weak Finnish, the work permit requirement and the economic crisis) is next to impossible.

Last night I had a phone conversation with François, my friend in Québec. He told me that he thinks about me (and other people who are dear to him) every morning, when he wakes up. That pleased me very much.
