I'm really bumming out this afternoon.  Probably it's more accurate to say I'm depressed, but I've never really liked to say that.  Drove into Buffalo and back last night because my Dad's side of the family had a post-thanksgiving gathering, and the ride home was awful.  20 miles an hour, sometimes down to a single lane, zero visability, scary.  I ( Read more... )

You know, your mom sounds like someone who judges alot. It's not right for her to say you're going to not get anywhere, either. ESPECIALLY when it comes to school.. that's important, and I personally think she should be willing to help you.

Just keep being who you are. Dress the way you want to dress. I like you for who you are. And I'm sure plenty of people besides your mom do too! Your mom loves you too.. she just sounds like she's picky when it comes to certain things, and how people act/dress. Is she old school?

My mother always hates the way I dress. I thought it was just being a guy but I imagine it's a generational difference. Even after all this time she and my father as well hate my tendency to show up at all family gatherings in well worn, comfortable jeans. (Doc's too: Greasy Boots, black)
Even when I've been teaching I normally wore blue jeans even if I was required to wear a "Sport Jacket".
Actually I feel less oppressed hearing that you suffer from this too.
I think your Red Doc's sound like the embodiment of the X-mas spirit!

It sounds to me as though your mother is out of her mind to tell you that she doesn't support your desire to better yourself through education. It's a very un-motherly Thing.
You should write Dear Abby and show your mother the response ( ... )
