This piece was composed in the autumn of 1921 in Montevideo, Uruguay and was dedicated to the Catedral Metropolitana of Montevideo. Agustin Barrios was in that moment, spending a few days at a hotel called ABC, located on the streets of Sarandi and Alzaibar, a short distance from said Cathedral. It was composed in the beginning with 2 movements, and has for subtitle "Distico Sacro". Afterwards in 1938 in Cuba, he composed a Prelude, that after having played it solo for a time, he decided to add it to his old work, The Catedral.
