All right, onwards to Saturday now and there are a lot of photos behind the cut. :-)
Perhaps foolishly, I’d opted to begin Saturday with my Bradley photo op. So I had the chance to get up close and personal with him very early in the proceedings! He seemed very relaxed and was smiling a lot and I love how my pic turned out. When I stepped in for the photo he looked down and promptly complimented me on having found the tape mark without even looking. I didn’t like to tell him how many of these things I’ve done now! I didn’t have time to bask in the Bradley afterglow as it was straight off to Eve Myles panel next. Well… with a detour to buy solo photo shoots with the rest of the knights for later in the day, which I hadn’t planned to do originally. I regret nothing!!
Anyway, it turned out we were treated to a joint panel with Eve Myles and Kai Owen, which was a riot. You can tell how well these two know each other and how well they get on. The result was hilarious. Naturally the topic frequently came back to John Barrowman’s perpetual nakedness on set and the impressiveness of his… assets (as well as the rather inappropriate things he tended to do with said assets… and Eve’s hair rollers, apparently). I’d purchased a joint photo op with Eve and Kai as well so I knew I was in for a busy afternoon on the photo shoot carousel (all the sessions were one after the other so it was set to be a bit manic).
Before that it was going to be the exclusive Merlin panel, though, and my friend and I went off to queue for that after a quick break to bask in the glorious Perth sunshine. Sadly, the aforementioned glorious sunshine was blazing through a window right above where the guys were going to be sitting for their talk so, for at least part of it, I was totally blinded by it shining directly in my eyes. It did give some of my pics an interesting halo/light effect, though! And it was possibly a good thing as it turned out Bradley was sitting pretty much directly in front of me, which was distracting to say the least! He was his usual quite reserved self in this first panel (a marked contrast to Sunday as it turned out), but the questions he did choose to answer he clearly thought about and was quite considered in what he said. The other guys were, naturally, their usual selves!
After the Merlin panel it was straight back to the big theatre to catch Alan Tudyk’s talk. It was a fun panel and he’s very amusing to listen to, even when the questions are a little odd. Naturally he was asked a lot about Firefly, but he also talked about playing Alpha in Dollhouse and some of his voice work. Then, when Alan’s panel ended, it was down to the photo area to start queuing for the first of my photo ops.
First up it was Eoin and we probably held the queue up by chatting. Eoin asked what I was doing there. (Well, duh!) I said I came out to see friends as well as to go to the con and he teased that I didn’t have friends in Oz, to which I replied that in that case he’d just chatted and had a pic with an imaginary person (my friend Tina)! Anyway, I got a nice hug from him and then it was round again to see Tom. I’d brought the purple beanie dragon I bought in Chepstow for Tom’s photo. I told him that because he was always saying the dragon was his favourite I had one for him to pose with. The pic came out really well, even though the dragon almost disappears in Tom’s huge hand! Next on the roundabout was Rupert and we had a little chat too before I had to go round for my final photo of the day. That was the Eve and Kai double photo. The pair of them were mucking about and play fighting and I said I wasn’t getting in the middle of that! When they quietened down and took the pic Kai said they had to do it again because his face was rubbish! It turned out his eyes were closed. Anyway, I got two pics out of it, though I think I prefer Eve and I in the first one.
That was the end of Saturday proper and it was off to my other friend’s house to get ready for the VIP party, which was happening not far from where she lives.
The format of the party had been changed somewhat from previous years. The open bar was a definite plus, but I’m not so sure about the change to the way you interact with the guests now. Instead of them being brought round to each table for a short chat it was basically left up to us to just go and chat to whoever we wanted to. In theory that’s probably better, but it’s not necessarily that easy to just go up to them and start a conversation when they’re talking amongst themselves. I had no compunction about going up to Rupert, Tom and Eoin, but anyone else, not so much. (I should add that the boys turned up somewhat late due to rugby watching - or tequila drinking in one instance)! Anyway, I was with my two friends, one of whom is in a wheelchair, and I did go and ask Rupert if he would come and chat to her, along with Bradley, which a little later they kindly did. In the meantime Alan Tudyk came and said a quick hello to our table as he was walking around, as did Carrie Fisher. She was very nice, very down to earth. I also managed a quick chat with Anthony Montgomery. He’s a lovely guy, and I almost felt guilty for not liking Enterprise!
At that point I spotted Eoin and Tom had arrived and after a bit I went to ask if they’d also come and chat with Tina. Eoin said they would and I went to the bar for a drink. On the way back Eoin was bent over chatting to another group and in the crowd I had no choice but to squeeze past him. I apologised for any manhandling that necessitated as I passed and he stood up and asked if my friend was down the other end of the room. When I said yes he proceeded to follow me down there with a hand on my shoulder. *wibble* While Eoin and Tina chatted Tom came up and when we got talking he showed us that he’s still got the pic from Adelaide on his phone of Tina mock punching his jaw! Eoin then sat down at the table with me and Josefina and we had a nice long chat about the tricky logistics of fulfilling all the Cold perks, not knowing how to work the message function on an iPhone (sorry, Blackberry girl here), tequila, Eoin’s lamentable lack of clean laundry and the fact that he goes back to start filming Night Shift in mid August. It was a lovely talk and he definitely made our evening by being all round awesome!
