Character
Name: Kay Faraday
Series: Ace Attorney
Timeline: The end of the last case in Ace Attorney Investigations
Canon Resource Links: Here you go! (The wiki mentions she went to live with her mother and relatives, but in the game, Kay says that it was her mother's relatives she stayed with; there isn't much mention or confirmation about her mother.)

Affiliation: Trainer

Personality: (A lot of this was just taken from her gargleblasted app, if that's okay!)

Kay is a teenage girl.

... Wait for it. She's energetic and perky and is constantly distracted by shiny things that might quite possibly be valuable-- not that she'd actually steal them, of course, she just likes the idea of treasure. For all that she makes comments about being a great thief and stealing things (like national flags), most of that is just joking-- like when she tells Gumshoe that she's "stolen" his position as Edgeworth's assistant. As she's said before, the only thing she wants to steal is the truth, and she's very serious about the Yatagarasu's sense of nobility. To her, the one thing a thief shouldn't ever steal is a life, because "It's too heavy of a burden on your soul to get away with, ever." Having lost her father, simply because Alba decided that he was an inconvenience, only drives that point home-- and of course she gets teary when certain things are mentioned, like meeting a girl who had also lost her father.

Not that Kay lets such depressing things get her down; she made a promise with her dad never to cry in front of strangers when she was a kid (which came into play only an hour after his death, in which she did her best to cheer up), and it's likely that her cheery outlook and NEVER SAY DIE attitude are in part because of that promise. She can be absolutely serious when she needs to be, but the majority of the time, she's bouncing from place to place, making chipper and cheeky comments about thieving methods, Edgeworth's great expressions and cool entrances/exits, and launching herself into things with unrivaled enthusiasm. One example of this is while investigating a murder case at the theme park, Kay remains aware that there's a contest to get a photo of all four Badger mascots for a fabulous prize-- and so whenever she sees one, investigating is put on halt while she rummages for a camera and happily exclaims, "Badger GET!" She's not above fangirling either, with a specific love geared towards ninjas-- especially the Jammin' Ninja, a television star.

Kay also has a habit of giving people nicknames, which seems to have been cultivated as a kid. Gumshoe was "Gummy" (which stuck) and Franziska was "Whip Lady" (which, thankfully, did not, because Kay gained a sense of self-preservation). She also addresses Lang as "Wolfy" and becomes highly indignant when he calls her "Crow-girl" because the Yatagarasu is a raven and so much better. Of course, anything that tarnishes the Yatagarasu's honor and reputation makes her indignant; she's very committed to carrying on her father's work. And this indignation can lead her into trouble, because Kay is reckless and it's fairly easy to kindle her fighting spirit. She's a smart girl (she saved and carefully preserved the perfume bottle belonging to her father's killer and offered it to confirm that identity later), and capable of being logical, but she also has her moments where she charges (or jumps) ahead (or below) without considering what comes after that. To put it simply, she's always ready to go and quite possibly the most honest and noble thief you'll ever meet.

... Never mind that she's actually never stolen anything.

Strengths/Weaknesses:

Strengths

- keeps her promises. Kay takes promises super seriously, and has done so ever since she was a little kid. Edgeworth is even able to clear some things up in a case because of Kay's determination to keep the promises she made with her father.

- very good at dramatic entrances and noble speeches!

- always speaks her mind and stands up for herself and others, which could be a strength and a weakness, depending on the situation; she was only ten when she kicked Edgeworth in the back of the knee because she thought he was picking on Gumshoe. You can't call Kay weak-willed in any sense of the term.

- possesses an unstoppable sense of humor and can usually find something to be joyful about; even when Edgeworth's been kidnapped and he can't seem to free himself, Kay finds his "NGOOOOOOOOOOH" face to be hilarious. When she was younger, she also popped her balloon on a cactus in order to startle the detective she was sharing a snack with. She's constantly joking and teasing.

- her enthusiasm level (god, her enthusiasm level). I can't emphasize this enough, Kay is a ball of energy who can get fired up about nearly anything. Edgeworth can never peacefully enjoy tea while she's around and, when he tells her she's too wound up, her reply is that he needs to become "too wound up" too, after she accuses him of being lackadaisical.

- she likes to help. Joking aside, Kay is always eager to lend assistance and doesn't mind investigating for clues and information to help Edgeworth out. She also possesses a device known as the "Little Thief", once owned by her father, and can use it to recreate crime scenes if she has enough information to input into the device-- the projections are life-size and can often offer up additional clues or contradictions. Due to this, it helps Edgeworth investigate crime scenes he might not normally have access to. It's also been used to disarm security systems, supposedly, but Kay's never used it for that. (I'm not sure if she'll be allowed to bring it with her, but it's definitely not a weapon.)

- with all the running and leaping and climbing she does, she's pretty athletic. It's rare for Kay to get tired out.

Weaknesses

- she's the personification of "not looking before you leap". When she's first introduced and they find a trap door, Kay promptly jumps in without bothering to check how far down it goes-- and crashes when the ladder slips. She comes to save Edgeworth through the window, but doesn't think about how she'll get back out until it's too late. She's just reckless.

- eaaasily provoked. Any insults to the Yatagarasu (and subsequently, her father) make Kay so angry that she loses the ability to think rationally. This almost always leads to trouble, like being framed for a murder she didn't commit, sometimes disregarding authority, and having a gun put to her head when she reacts to a taunt. I mean, really, she was all set to illegally enter a country's embassy after hearing that the fake Yatagarasu had shown up, because the guard wouldn't let her through the door.

- not always the brightest person ever. Though it's just that she's more of a dork than anything, with her triumphantly exclaiming that a key is... most definitely a key, that surely must unlock something!! And obviously the Blue Badger mascot is her natural enemy because he's got the word "badge" in his name, and thieves encountering badge-holders never ends well.

Pokemon
Starter: Murkrow, nicknamed Byrne after her father

Samples

First Person Sample: [ the camera catches something dark blue waving gracefully in the wind. Could it be a Pokemon? On second glance, it looks more like a muffler. As the camera pans up, a figure is silhouetted against the sun. Ponytail fluttering. Stance dynamic. And then-- ] Dark skies of evening, when no other bird dares take wing, one alone remains all-seeing! With her trusty winged companion by her side, the Yatagarasu soars aloft above all else until she seizes her prey with the grace of a swan and the deadliness of a hawk! You can run, but the noble thief will descend upon you with righteous vengeance!

[ and so she descends. Off the top of a ledge that isn't very high at all. ]

So, how was that? I mean, I'll have to change it up a bit when it's not evening, and this place doesn't have hawks and swans here, does it? But Murkrows aren't exactly graceful.

[ the answering squawk sounds more like a grumble. ]

Don't worry! You're my faithful partner, so we'll make do! I guess if I have to admit it, I'm not always light on my feet either. We'll just keep working on it and revamping that image of thieves until we're the ideal! People and their Pidgeys will strive to reach our level! The Yatagarasu will be reborn, better than ever-- and it'll all be thanks to us! How about it, Byrne?

[ as the PokeGear falls to the ground, you'll see a Murkrow flap over to give Kay a brofist. ]

Third Person Sample:

So maybe she didn't always look before she leaped - a trait Mr. Edgeworth liked to point out with alacrity - but Kay did possess common sense. Most of the time. That, and years of experience learning how to operate Little Thief had prepared her for this small pink device that performed several functions. One of which she was using now.

"Murkrow, the Darkness Pokemon," the... thing announced. "Feared and loathed by many, it is believed to bring misfortune to all those who see it at night."

"... Really?" Kay looked from the PokeGear to the large black bird sitting in front of her. The bird stared back, its expression resigned. "This is it," the expression said to her. "Now you'll fear and loathe me too."

She studied it for a moment longer, then grinned and crouched down in front of it. "Hey, you know what Wolfy calls me?" she began conversationally. "Crow-girl, which is a ginormous pain, since there's a huge difference between ravens and crows! It doesn't mean I hate them, though."

The Murkrow tilted its head, watching her warily as Kay slowly extended a hand to it. "The night's the best part to get things done, and hey, if people don't want to see you at night, that makes my job a lot easier." Not that she was sure this world needed a noble thief just yet, but it never hurt to think ahead. "So don't worry. I'm not going to be one of those people who's afraid of you, if you're up for being my partner. We'll even give you a name of your own, how about that?"

The bird lowered its head towards her hand, giving her glove the lightest of touches with its beak, and then flapped its wings enough to fly up to her shoulder. It gave her muffler a few tugs to form a comfortable perch and then descended with a satisfied "Krooooow."

Kay grinned as it settled; it was lighter than she thought it would be. She'd originally been worried about being stuck here on her own, though she knew she could handle herself just fine. But having this bird with her, this misunderstood creature like the Yatagarasu had been when someone had been impersonating the thief... she felt more at ease. More ready for adventure. It was as if her father was with her, telling her that now wasn't the time to falter. Clearly she'd been brought here because this world did need the Yatagarasu, and it was her job to find out where corruption was and what she could do about it. Just like he would have done.

"Byrne," she murmured thoughtfully, and was surprised when the Murkrow spread its wings. "So you like that? It's a big name to live up to, but I've got faith in you!"

With that, the Yatagarasu's successor and her new friend took off into the night.
