Burning dvds

I've been downloading videos from t'internet and want to burn them to dvd so I can watch them on the tv. I do have a dvd burner, but it all seems to be a bit more complicated than I thought it might be. What is the best way to go about converting avi files to something I can watch on tv?

Really simple straightforward easy to use instructions will be good for me, preferably free too ;-)
