This post is making me hungry!

Day 4: 10 of your Favorite Foods

This is actually in no particular order, because I love them all!

1. Oyakodon- literally "Parent and Child Rice Bowl," it is a delicious mixture of veggies, egg and chicken heaped over rice and topped with leek. It's the Japanese comfort food equivalent of mac&cheese to Americans. My friend introduced me to it when she made it for me in Japan, and I've been in love with it ever since. There are many variations on the basic recipe, such as Tannindon (Pork and Egg) or Oyanashi Don (Oyakodon without the chicken), but I love oyakodon best.

2. Sushi- and I'm not talking about that California Roll-poor-excuse-for-a-maki-roll sushi. I'm talking real sushi that you pretty much only find in Japan or places along the coast with a thriving fishing economy. Pictured is otoro, one of the most expensive pieces of sushi, and my absolute favorite. It is so flavorful, smooth, and satisfying and worth every penny. Before I had real sushi in Japan, I couldn't believe that it was possible for raw fish to taste so good that people would eat them out of existence. And then I had otoro. And unagi. And then it was all downhill from there.

3. Thai Yellow Curry- another one of my friend's specialties, I never liked curry much until I had this particular variety. The intense spices are set off by a creamy taste of coconut milk that pairs so well with chicken and rice. I was hooked from the first bite!

4. Scalloped Potatoes- I love potatoes and I love cheese, so the two together make one of my most favorite foods. I rarely have the chance to eat it, because y'know, it's really unhealthy, but I absolutely savor it when I do.

5. Mangoes- Finally a fresh fruit! Mangoes are my absolute favorite fruit, although it's a real hit-or-miss in the US finding one that tastes good. I love mango flavored everything too, so if there's mango in a dish or juice somewhere, I'm sure to pick it above everything else.

6. New York Style Cheesecake- I like my cheesecakes plain and simple, with a rich flavor that New York Style gets just right.

7. Boiled/Stir-Fried Cabbage- okay, I admit this is weird, but I can't get enough of the taste of boiled or stir-fried cabbage. It's one of my absolute favorite vegetables, so I put it in all sorts of soups and dishes when I can. However, I don't like sauerkraut.

8. Carrots/ mushrooms/ broccoli-  I call these three the "holy trinity" of my vegetarian cooking. I put at least one of these, if not all of them, into most of the foods I cook for lunch and dinner.

9. Milk- okay, not a food, but it is my absolute #1 favorite thing to drink. Besides water, it also is about the only think I drink on a regular basis.

10. Butternut Squash Soup with Ginger- This is my Achille's Heel. If I see this in my school's dining hall, everything else gets thrown aside and I fill up on this amazing soup. It has a lovely, rich buttery taste set off by a kick of ginger. I think my love for this soup is also why I love kabocha, or Japanese pumpkin, which I find has a very similar taste.
