I didn't actually listen to many new albums last year, by which I mean, albums released in 2018. One that I did listen to though was Dessa's Chime, and I basically had "
Fire Drills" and "
Velodrome" on repeat for an entire week. Dessa's one of my favorite lyricists, and these two songs showcase her at her best. "Velodrome" is just a lovely, wistful song about free will and/or the lack thereof, and "Fire Drills" is a ferocious and rousing ode to women's independence, with a side of vicious snarling of a song about how being a woman cannot be about "standing sentry to [our] innocence."
I was going to write more, but then Youtube distracted me with videos of Hasan Minhaj in the sidebar, which okay, yeah, Youtube def knows I have a crush on him. Though, okay, sidebar of my own here:
Hasan Minhaj's Patriot Act on Netflix is great and you should watch it! He hits the sweet spot between something like Seth Meyers' A Closer Look segments and John Oliver's This Week Tonight, with a bonus of being more handsome and charming than either of them. No shade to Seth and John Oliver, I just Hasan is very handsome. Also, I absolutely love that Hasan Minhaj's presumed audience is not a white thirtysomething, but rather a Desi or immigrant kid thirtysomething. It's just so nice that for once, it's the white folks who have to keep up with Hasan Minhaj's specific references and life experiences rather than explaining them. The Deep Cuts segments on Youtube are especially great for that, where he gets chatty with his audience and answers their questions, and it's basically great every time, because he's seriously delightfully chatty with them.
