Although We Are Faithless

Fuck this movie, I am still full of Emotions About Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes. I don't know what happened, I wasn't this invested after Cap 1 or the Avengers. I really need all of the fic to process these emotions. ALL OF IT.

I haven't watched last night's Community yet, since it's apparently the first part of the finale two-parter, and I prefer watching those together. I'm also getting increasingly nervous about Community's prospects for renewal. It would be pretty disappointing to get so close to the hallowed Six Seasons and a Movie and get cancelled now.

As pleased as I was to see Alistair return, it was pretty sad that it was only in ghost/hallucination form :( I think that Elementary in general does a great job of feeling really lived in, with enough mentions of characters like Ms. Hudson and Alfredo and Joan's mom that they're still obviously part of Joan and Sherlock's day to day lives. Alistair hasn't had any mentions since his first and only appearance though, which makes this episode hit less hard than it might have.

The mystery aspect was solid, and I liked seeing Joan take on the majority of the case work. Of course, as usual, the Joan/Sherlock interaction and relationship was the strongest part of the show. I loved Joan's forthright but still compassionate response to Sherlock's grief and doubt over his recovery. I loved that, as usual, Sherlock went from deflecting and avoiding talking to Joan to spilling all. Those moments always feel so earned. Elementary is quite possibly still the most emotionally mature and honest show on TV, and it's such a nice oasis of people being adults who can communicate about their feelings.

For all that I thought the Alistair ghost/hallucination was sort of hokey, I was still genuinely touched by the final scene and Sherlock's grief. Someone in the AV Club comments said that JLM's performance as Sherlock is moving, and I have to agree. It's consistently a moving performance, and he and Lucy Liu's Joan have such a comfortable rapport.

And here is today's poem:

"Prayer" by Carol Ann Duffy

Some days, although we cannot pray, a prayer
utters itself. So, a woman will lift
her head from the sieve of her hands and stare
at the minims sung by a tree, a sudden gift.

Some nights, although we are faithless, the truth
enters our hearts, that small familiar pain;
then a man will stand stock-still, hearing his youth
in the distant Latin chanting of a train.

Pray for us now. Grade 1 piano scales
console the lodger looking out across
a Midlands town. Then dusk, and someone calls
a child’s name as though they named their loss.

Darkness outside. Inside, the radio’s prayer -
Rockall. Malin. Dogger. Finisterre.
