Almost Spring

I spent some truly lovely time making Vitamin D today, reading in the sunshine. I am also incredibly pleased to see that I actually got a little tan on my legs! I'm never going to be one of those people who can get a nice deep tan, but I'll take being a couple shades darker than ghostly pale happily.

Thursday's Elementary had an extremely obvious mystery, but was pleasant enough anyway. I was not entirely pleased about the continued presence of Lestrade, who is significantly more annoying than the roosters. I loved Joan's fierce protection of Sherlock's sobriety, and that she was the one to deliver the ultimatum to Lestrade. I think it's interesting that she's the one who's both more compassionate and wanting to help, but also the one who lays down rock solid boundaries. Sherlock was willing to just ride it out and let Lestrade run himself down, but Joan was the one who told Lestrade to get his shit together and get out.

Also, I loved that the mugging wasn't an elaborate plot of Sherlock's like Lestrade imagined. It so easily could have been, and is the sort of ludicrous, byzantine interpersonal manipulation that other versions of Sherlock like to indulge in. But Elementary Sherlock, of course, can't be bothered, and ultimately both he and Joan were right about what Lestrade needed to get back on his feet.

And oh Community. I will forever love how easy it is for Greendale to just go full speed ahead into all manner of dystopian scenarios. I think this episode was too short and a little too half-baked to fully land, but it was still enjoyable, and I do think it had some smart and interesting things to say about the characters and about the perils of social media when it comes to our addiction to wanting to be liked (those sweet, sweet likes and favorites and upvotes). I loved how everyone's reactions to MeowMeowBeenz was so completely true to themselves, especially Abed, who would of course love for social interactions to become rated and codified that way. My favorite moment of the episode was Hickey's initial reaction to the app, his strangled, almost unhinged, "I know I fought for everyone in this country..." It was simultaneously hilarious and dark, which is one of my favorite aspects of Community, that it's both incredibly sentimental and occasionally really dark.

I wanted more Jeff/Shirley interaction, because they have one of my favorite study group friendships and it's not explored enough. I loved the Jeff/Britta interaction though.
