Moving Out (四)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Satoshi was sleeping.
As much as Jun hated to wake up in the morning, one person made it worth the effort. Being able to gaze at the innocent face of his lover resting on his arm, curled up next to him was one of his favorite things. He woke up early by nature, but he was only brought out of his foul mood when he saw his Satoshi`s face.
This morning was no different. Sun a bit too bright, the Takeda headquarters was already buzzing, in particular with some loud crashes that most likely belonged to an overeager Aiba.
There had been an uneasy shift in the mood of the camp in the last five minutes, though, that made Jun move up to his elbow to listen more closely.
“Hmm...” Satoshi groaned when he lost his pillow.
“Sorry,” he whispered softly and kissed the Captain`s cheek.
Jun tensed when he heard steps hurrying down the hall, followed by harsh whispers. Not a moment later, a knock came at his quarter`s door. The messenger didn`t wait for permission, entering in a flurry. Jun`s pleasant morning was shattered with a high pitched voice.
“Get up, Oh-chan! Get up, lazy ass!” Ninomiya charged straight to the bed, yanking off the blankets.
“What the hell are you doing here? And more importantly, what`s the news you`re supposed to be bringing?” Glaring through half-lidded eyes, Jun refused to move and kept his legs intertwined with Satoshi`s. The shorter man`s lashes had barely fluttered at the commotion in their room.
“Urgent news; we`re moving out tonight. Both of you are supposed to report to your superiors before noon. And now that I`ve delivered my message, will you please get your skinny butts dressed?”
Nino left in the same manner he came, rudely and loudly.
Jun muttered about the stupidity of intrusions, but detangled himself to get ready and shook the body lying comatose next to him. “Satoshi... Satoshi...” His lover`s tanned body didn`t move but he heard a muffled grunt.
“Come on,” Satoshi wasn`t fully conscious as Jun pulled him out of bed, got him dress in his kimono, and dragged the sleepy man behind him to find General Suzuki and Director Kitagawa. He still wasn`t awake, even when Jun left him in the care of his superior.
Crossing the compound to the newly erected tent, which by design was designated as the War Planning headquarters, he was greeted by the guardsman standing at attention.
The middle aged man bowed and gestured to the entrance. “Please go in, Matsumoto-san.”
Pulling back the tent flap, he was surprised by a lean figure standing over an area map, studying a small point.
“Akanishi...”
The handsome man glanced up from the map and grinned. “Matsumoto. Good, you can tell me what this squiggle is supposed to mean.”
He waved his old friend over casually, although Jun was clearly confused at his presence. “What are you doing here? I thought you had a station in Kyoto.”
Akanishi sighed, as if he wasn’t exactly happy with the arrangements himself. “Yeah, but I was called in to help with coordinating the troops-”
Their greeting was cut short when Director Kitagawa entered the tent with an entourage in tow. Not bothering to sit on the benches lining the tent walls, the men stood in a lopsided circle around the War Director. His heavily built Assistant Director stepped forward and met the gazes of each man present. His gruff voice pierced through the tense silence with a decisive announcement. “Fighting has broken out in the north.” Frowning, he continued, “Kurosawa’s group has already been sent to support our men for the time being, and naturally, the other squads are preparing to leave now.”
Director Kitagawa put a hand on his assistant’s shoulder, looking around at the other soldiers, then said softly, “I need volunteers to survey the field before we send reinforcement troops.”
No one moved for a second as they took in the gravity of the serious situation, but then Akanishi stepped forward and bowed. “Sir, Matsumoto and I can go.”
Jun glared at the other war planner, annoyed at being volunteered without his approval. Especially since the task would require them to head out immediately, leaving no time to tell Satoshi what was happening before they left.
Not noticing Jun’s dilemma, his superior’s gaze focused on him, waiting for some sign of acceptance. Gritting his teeth, Jun bowed as well.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Ninomiya was listening.

The amount of information one could glean from their surroundings just by paying attention was amazing. Nino never got tired of shocking people with what he knew and being a messenger meant you were freely told or sent with important pieces of news on a regular basis. And if he wasn’t given a particular message, he could always just nick the info with a slight of hand.

Just this morning, he’d already learned to steer clear of the kitchen due to Aiba’s new natto experiment, that the Daimyo’s new girlfriend was already cheating on him behind his back, and that Akanishi peculiarly might have asked for his own transfer himself.

Strolling across base camp, catching snippets of conversations, Nino was hunting for something out of the ordinary amongst the warriors readying for war. It was no surprise then when he saw a shifty pair of soldiers, trying to look inconspicuous, duck around a corner of a building, Nino followed curiously wondering what he might hear this time. Squatting next to the corner, he peeked around for a second, satisfied they’d stopped within earshot and settled himself against the wall to listen.

“Akanishi-san’s going to do it now. He’s already arranged to have some Shinano soldiers help him.”

Nino couldn’t believe the data he’d already gotten from a whispered phrase. Shinano soldiers? Akanishi is a traitor?

His partner was surprised by a different matter. “Now? During the battle?”

“Yeah. Akanishi-san said it would be a perfect distraction. No one will know any different if one more person gets killed, intentionally or not.”

Killed?! Just what the hell have I come across?

His companion hummed his agreement and murmured, “North Sezawa forest, right? I’ll find Tanaka and meet up with you, but is our target already there?”

“Yeah, Matsumoto’s there now.”

Stunned, Nino went pale as he heard the name of one of his closest friends these men planned to murder.

The sight of a panicked Nino, which was completely alarming to begin with, frantically pushing to get through the crowd of warriors in the encampment made Satoshi’s breath catch in his throat.

“What’s wrong?” His eyes were wide with concern.

Nino skidded to a halt by grabbing the front of the Captain’s armor and bent over breathing hard.

“It’s - gasp - Jun.”

Satoshi’s heart stopped.

“Akanishi - gasp - plans to - gasp - betray him.” Nino looked up with a pained expression and clasped both sides of his friend’s face. “They’re gonna - gasp - gonna kill him... You have to - gasp - hurry... They’re in - gasp -Northern Sezawa forest...Go!”

Nino’s hands clutched his shoulders and pushed hard.

“Go!”

Shocked etched into his face, Satoshi turned away from his troop with a few unsteady steps, but quickly began gaining speed once out of the camp.

“Go.” Nino collapsed to the ground in exhaustion behind him. Satoshi’s heartbeat returned, loud in his ears.

Jun.
