The Gift (二)

Jun was worrying.

Correction. He was pissed.

If she doesn’t move her hand in two seconds...

His glare went unnoticed as the geisha across the room left her hand on Satoshi’s knee. Needless to say, no one else noticed Jun’s distress either since the conference room was in complete chaos. Samurai left and right were shouting in each other’s red faces and falling over themselves to reach for more sake.

What had started as a serious strategy meeting between the Takeda clan leaders early that morning had dragged on until very late, when everyone became weary of the tense atmosphere. Ogura was the person who'd summoned the geisha and the sake had come from many places brought by various young messengers. Within an hour, the room was full of thirty three rambunctious warriors and two men who couldn’t find the right timing to leave. Frustrated, Jun crossed his arms and tapped a finger restlessly.

Custom had demanded that he, one of the Takeda War Coordinators, sit next to the Chief War Director, or he would’ve been the one with his hand on his lover’s knee. He turned to the floor at his right and threw an annoyed look at the recently passed out Director Kitagawa. Returning his attention to the other side of the room, he was slightly satisfied to see the uncomfortable look on his Satoshi’s face as the woman leaned closer to whisper something in his ear, but then her hand shifted lower down his thigh.

Jun snapped. He rigidly stood up and stalked over the mass of bodies in his way. Barely pausing, he put an arm underneath Satoshi’s and hauled him up. The Captain didn’t even have time to look relieved, because he was still being pulled away swiftly by the irritated man.

Stuck in a flurry of angry thoughts, it took a very firm tug on Jun’s left arm to get him to pause the quick strides he’d been taking. Right away, the anger faded to guilt when he glanced back to see the shorter man bent over panting with a hand on his knee and the other still wrapped a bit uncomfortably in Jun’s tight grip. Loosening his fingers with a gasp, he faced Satoshi with an awkward expression.

“Sorry.” His remorseful apology only got a tired wave from the other man who was still hunched over.

“S’fine.”

Wanting to make up for his impulsiveness, he reluctantly suggested they go fishing for the fifth time this week.

“...No. Not now.”

Any residual anger at the geisha vanished, as all he could feel now was shock. He just said...no? Satoshi pulled his hand away from Jun’s light grasp and used it to straighten his own kimono.

“You should go back to your room.”

The tired remark had just as stunning effect on Jun, as this was the first time in five years he’d been rejected by the other man. Completely unsure what to say to make things right, he stood motionless as Satoshi padded off unhurriedly in the direction of his quarters. Matsumoto continued to stare at the spot he’d heard the shorter man say he would pass on his favorite obsession.

Why did he send me away? I don’t think he was annoyed...

A little disheartened, Jun unconsciously shuffled along his normal path across the Takeda grounds. He didn’t know how long he’d been standing in front of his door until a familiar voice from behind pulled him back to reality.

“What’re you doing?”

Equal parts relief and confusion left Jun staring speechless to his right at the man who’d left him not minutes before.

“Eh?”

Satoshi looked up at him with an amused grin and slipped his arm around Jun’s waist. “Waiting?”

Jun couldn’t stop a ridiculous smile from growing and leaned over to kiss the shorter man’s forehead to assure himself it wasn’t a dream. “You aren’t mad? But you left...”

“Mad? At you? You just saved me from the clutches of that scary woman. As for leaving, that was for an entirely different reason.” The Captain smiled like he had a secret and wouldn’t meet his lover’s eyes, then let out a poorly disguised laugh. “Jun, I’d be the first to admit you can get pretty possessive...but knowing you care enough to feel that way makes me happy.”

With that one phrase, the taller man had recovered from his earlier insecurity with an added boost to his ego.

“Anyway, can we go inside now? I have something to give you.” It was then he noticed Satoshi had been holding something behind his back with his other arm. Extremely curious, he craned his neck back to scrutinize the square box.

They entered the quarters the two of them had been using since headquarters shifted to the northern area two years ago. The room reflected the couple’s interests with a neatly stacked selection of short essays and strategy manuals next to a handmade wooden box hiding Satoshi’s bewildering array of art supplies. What wouldn’t fit had been stashed, at Jun’s insistence, in the Captain’s new room, which was turning into his regular work space anyway.

The pair made themselves comfortable at their simple wood table, which Satoshi had also made. Jun leaned forward on the table, smiling eagerly to see what the “something” was. Satoshi also had a sleepy smile on his face as he set the small box carefully on the table.

“I know you don’t think the day you were born is important, but I’ll never stop being grateful.” He gestured towards the present shyly. Recognizing the woodcraft as his boyfriend’s handiwork having received a different gift in the same manner, the younger man knew to slide a section down to get the package open.

A violet tea cup rested on its side in a bed of grass. Jun reverentially lifted the piece from its wood case, examining the twisting tiger with a look of awe.

“You made this for me?”

Jun saw the other nod his head out of the corner of his eye.

“It’s exquisite.”

Pleased with Jun’s reaction, Satoshi hung his head in embarrassed pride. Tearing his attention from the beautiful design, Matsumoto also took in the equally striking figure in front of him, particularly how his red kimono was revealing a collarbone that Jun wanted very much to run his fingers over. Setting the tiger etched cup on the table, Jun slowly advanced toward his own prey with a sly grin.

Author’s Note:

Writing in the Sengoku Period was pretty hard. I had to consider what roles everyone would play and how it would change the story.

Plus there were little annoyances about the era. For example, when Satoshi stayed up all night to work on Jun's present, I completely spaced that there would have been no electric lights for him to work by, so the candles got added. Then that the paints wouldn't have been in plastic tubes and also that they didn't have birthdays yet, much less boxes to put presents in... But it was fun to work through the details. In the end, I feel it was definitely worth it.

Please comment if you liked or disliked anything about the story. Thank you!
