И здесь четко видно достоинство позиции чужака с камерой. Он сделал большое количество сугубо любительских снимков. Однако в этом и их достоинство: это взгляд американца, который снимал для себя, а не на заказ какого-то издания, несущего в условиях холодной войны свою особую миссию. Однако в его серии Ленинград предстает ужасно серым и непривлекательным городом, который я узнаю по очертаниям, но не по духу. Мне он тогда казался совершенно очаровательным.
На снимке выше, это была одна из важнейших примет советской повседневности. Такой ларек стоял в полусотне метров от нашего общежития. Мы называли его "капканом": студент с утро встает с чистыми намерениями посвятить себя науке, а на пути этот капкан. Не все могли пройти мимо, а остановившись, удовлетвориться только одной кружкой "Жигулевского".

"Leningrad USSR (plus some other cities) mid 1970s". Michael Neubert (на фото): - My father was the Consul General in Leningrad from the summer of 1974 through the summer of 1977. I visited the Soviet Union for the first time in December 1974. I then spend the summer of 1975 in Leningrad and returned again in December 1975 for about a month. I spent a full year in Leningrad from the summer of 1976 through June of 1977. Some from 35 mm slides and some from prints, including B&W, as early as December 1974 and through 1977. This link (below) was the first that seemed to attract the interest of some Russians.
