We managed to get Dave off to Boulder, CO this afternoon. Because the Land Cruiser is dead and the Subaru is full of sound gear, we thought it best if he not take and leave a car in long term parking at O'Hare. I dropped him off at Terminal 3 and came back home. While packing Dave asks me, "Do you know how to get out of O'hare?" I had to make fun of him just a bit on this one. No, hon. I've never been to the big, bad, scary airport before. And I don't think I could follow the signs even if I did develop amnesia between now and then.
The boarding pass requirement to get through security went into effect on Friday. Brilliant day of the week to start anything if you ask me...NOT! Being more of a pleasure traveler this doesn't effect me much because I usually have to check something. But when Dave is in business mode, he preferred checking in at the gate to avoid the pleasure travelers. Apparently the system is far from perfected. By his report, there were no signs anywhere informing people of the new policy. So many were being turned away at security, including himself (you can't blame him for trying I guess). He was prepared for this and got in line for the self-check kiosk. The machine couldn't find his e-ticket reservation. Since he had the opportunity to watch the 4 or 5 people in front of him walk away in disgust, this didn't surprise him either. He got everything worked out at the paper ticket counter while dozens of others stood in the e-ticket line. Security was running less smoothly than it had over the holidays...new rules for what goes in the bins, bins not replaced fast enough, and security people barking orders like drill sergeants. Dave hated airports before they started using partial strip searches. Fortunately, the Denver end was uneventful.
Things are always quiet when Dave isn't around. The cats hover closer without a second human to bug around the house. Tomorrow I'll have to figure out which projects to get done while he's gone.
