Where It's At: Kashish

Three cheers for our friend, Ruby, who recommended to us the most unlikely little qwik-mart as Greensboro's Indian food mecca (or should that be varanasi?). The Kashish Food Mart on Battleground really is more of an Indian grocery than typical convenience store; maybe the name should have clued me in, but I had never really considered that the hole-in-the-wall joint might be anything more than a beer and cigarette stop with a disproportionately large number of U-Hauls in the parking lot. Heck, I drive by the place all the time.

Then, last week while I was sick, the Doctor stopped in and bought some frozen bread. He fried me up the best gobi paratha I've ever had, putting some of our local Indian restaurants to shame.

I made my own pilgrimage to Kashish on my way home from church tonight. Wow. They have a compact-but-fantastic freezer section--full of Indian breads, vegetables, appetizers and entrees--and shelves of other ingredients and spices. I don't usually have a problem finding the more obscure fresh ingredients and spices at our local grocery stores, but international freezer sections are scantily stocked, to say the least. This is the place I've been looking for!

Hey, they even have a website. Funny, the girl in that generic grocery store shot doesn't seem she'd be the type to do her shopping there. Especially since she appears to live in Denmark.
