Time for a Change
This...was embarrassing.
For once, it wasn’t Dee who had managed to get himself tangled up as a hostage or in some type of hostage situation.
It was Ryo.
Who was very not pleased with himself as he looked down at his wrist. It was obviously broken somewhere in it, he could feel something pop every time he moved his hand. That wasn’t good at all. It was his main hand, and he used that to fight.
God, this was even similar to the situation they had had with Bikky right after he and come to the station and been partnered with Dee. Playing bodyguard for a witness, and Dee had gone to grab something, and the next thing Ryo had remembered was waking up with an aching head and a sobbing girl. Part of the reason she had been in police custody had been because she had seen not only the shooting, but she saw where the victim had hidden his parcel before getting shot.
Rubbing the sore spot on his neck, scratching at the dry spot of blood left there from what he thought was a needle mark, Ryo looked around the room. No windows, just the one door, and a highly upset child.
He had to get them out of here.
Dee had snickered when they had gotten the job of watching the girl, telling Ryo that he couldn’t keep this one as well. Well, he had snickered after ranting to the chief that they weren’t baby sitters. Using as much foul language as he could. Ryo would have tried washing his partner’s mouth out with soap, but something told him that would probably just encourage the man. Dee loved any attention he could get from Ryo, even angry attention. Man claimed it got him the best sex, and Ryo never could help turning scarlet and smacking Dee upside the head.
He wondered if Dee knew where they were at, and if he did, what kind of hair brain idea he had going to get them out.
Dee’s voice was clear in his head, muttering about who was the brilliant one last time who had set a bomb to go off right over their heads.
Ryo was jolted out of his thoughts as the girl started to wail again, and he made soft noises at her. She couldn’t have been more than ten, and he hoped her mother wasn’t giving Dee a hard time for losing them. Dee would never let him live that down.
Actually, there was very little Dee let him live down, down to and including the little noises Ryo made a night while asleep.
Really, there were times when Ryo wondered why he put up with that man.
“It’s okay,” he said softly, petting the girl’s hair and making soft, shushing sounds at her. “Dee’s still out there, and you know how he is, right?”
“Loud,” sniffled the girl, looking at him with large brown eyes. “And pushing. Momma wants to wash his mouth out, she said so.”
A chuckle. “You tell your momma that I agree with her and maybe we can work together later and do that. And Dee is very loud, and pushy at times, but you know what else he is?”
She looked at him, eyes wide, and slowly shook her head.
“He’s also very dependable. Don’t worry, Dee will get us out of this, and then everything will be fine.”
“Nice to hear you praise my name. Always knew that’s how you felt.”
The voice right behind his ear made Ryo jump, and he spun around to yell at Dee, too shocked to do anything else. There was suddenly a hand over his mouth. “Much as I enjoy you talking about all my finer traits, though you haven’t mentioned ones like the size of my....”
This time, it was Ryo who covered Dee’s mouth. “There’s a child present,” the man growled, giving Dee the Look. It was a look he had long practiced refereeing in Dee and Bikky battles. Bikky had his own variation, which included the fact that Bikky was said child of “there is a child present.” It was one of the few things Ryo had going for him when he got into those squabbles, and he tried to not waste it too often.
Dee grinned, lips curving under Ryo’s palm, which he then nipped. “Anyway, I got some of the gang from the Penguin’s causing havoc downstairs. This dumbass has you stored right about his shop. I came in through the fire escape down the hall. Now, if we could go before the cops get here....”
“Dee, we -are- the cops.”
“I mean ones who will arrest the kids downstairs. They -are- our distraction, you know.”
A long moment of glaring, and then the girl sniffled.
“Right,” Ryo said, sighing. “Let’s go.”

Somehow, Fate apparently decided to play nice for once, because they actually got out of there without something being blown up. An improvement over the last few times. Once outside, and resting in the taxi, Dee had given a loud, sharp whistle, and kids had boiled out of the shop. Then they had headed for the nearest hospital, Ryo making Dee call in backup as they did.
A quick checkup told Ryo what he had thought was correct, and he was given an air cast, mostly just for the bracing factor, and told to get some rest.
Bikky had fussed when he had gotten home, even forgoing his normal fight with Dee over inviting himself to be nice. Ryo was happy with that. It had been a long day, and he really did just want to relax and work through the inherent stress of it. Dee was even being fairly good. Well, for him. There was snarking at Bikky, true, but he did tone it down, and he even made some supper, which was impressive in and of itself. Ryo loved the man, but he was irredeemably lazy at times.
Still, when Ryo found himself feeling exhausted, he found Dee next to him, grinning without shame. That set off all sorts of warning bells in his head, and Ryo instinctively looked around for a pillow or a Bikky to use as a defense.
“Now, given you are apparently not telling people about -all- my virtues,” Dee leered, “maybe I should give you a refresher?”
Ryo wanted to bop him. “Why couldn’t they have given me a plaster cast?” he muttered, grabbing a pillow from the head of the bed and imposing it between himself and Dee. “Down, Dee. Rest, remember. I’m supposed to be resting.”
“I could tie your good hand to the top of the bed, and then do all the work myself. See, restful.”
“Good night, Dee.”
The other man chuckled as Ryo reached over and turned out the light. As he shut his eyes, he heard the other man murmur something.
“That wasn’t a no.”
This was going to be a long night.
