Shut Up and Let's Go!

I'm having a withdrawal. Yesterday, I finished watching Shut Up, Flower Boy Band which I marathon-ed for two days. It is an accomplishment for me, I cannot manage to finish any Korean drama since last year. Maybe I got fed up with the overused, cliched plots or I got severely hooked with anything Japanese that I cannot digest anything otherwise. Whatever. What I'm sure of is, this drama got me back to my Kdrama mojo. Yay.

Eye Candy is a six member underground rock band led by Byung Hee. When the group transfers into the prestigious Jungsang High School, they find their rival, Strawberry Fields. This is a story about the two rock bands and how they deal with friendship, relationships, and their passion for music. (cr: Wikipedia)
So back to the awesome drama that is Shut Up, Flower Boy Band. This drama has everything a Kdrama watcher would love. Solid cast, good plot, flawless lead, believable conflicts and satisfying ending. At first, I thought it would be like Dream High, with glitzy musical performances and all ala Glee, but lo and behold, it was not, it's so much more than that. It's about tear-inducing friendship, fitting in, youth, music, dreams and love. It's so rare to find a drama that is so consistent all throughout, I never got bored or frustrated (which is mostly the case with the tons of Kdramas I've watched). The conflicts didn't drag out, the characters felt real that you can't help but to sympathize with them, in addition, almost all of them are lovable. The female characters are not the annoying save-me-I'm-a-damsel-in-distress type, they all have backbone, they fight when they needed to, they are forthright. Especially the lead girl, Su Ah, when you look at her she seems like the typical fragile, pretty, female lead but actually she's tough, she's honest and she can stand on her own. Girl power, she has it!

I think the thing I loved the most about this drama is the heartfelt friendship between our flower boys, their dynamics and chemistry are superb. Their friendship is the kind that is molded from hardships, friendship through thick and thin. They want to share their music to the world. Together. Byung-hee's (Lee Min Ki) and Ji-hyuk's (Sung Joon) friendship is enviable, Ha-jin's (Yoo Min-kyu) and Kyung-jong's (Kim Min-seok) bickering dynamics is adorable, Ji-hyuk's and Hyun-soo's(Infinite's L) relationship is functionally dysfunctional and Ji-hyuk's and Do-il's (Lee Hyun-jae) is silently soothing. They are good individually but so much better together.

I also kinda dig the Ji-hyuk/Su Ah love arch, c'mon, secretly sneaking on school's staircase? longing glances? brushing touches when no one's watching? Ain't it hot? Jeez. Also, I don't think I can get pass this drama if the girl lead is as annoying as Jan Di in Boys over Flower or worst Bella from Twilight. Thank god, Jo Boa's adorable./sigh of relief

The biggest revelation in this drama for me is none other than Ji-hyuk's actor Sung Joon (cue:flail!). He's freakin' hot and his voice is as deep Mariana's Trench, which I dig, take note. His icy stares are electrifying, good for me because he's making them on this drama. A lot. In contrast, his smile is beautiful. Ahhh, let me pinch those adorable cheeks of his. On a more serious note, I think he's pretty good in this drama, considering he's practically a newbie. By the way, he's Kang Ji  Hwan's rebel cousin in Lie To Me (which I didn't finish too). Oh, and he is actually a 1990-er, he's just 21.

To summarize my babbling, this drama is A+. Be sure to check it out. It's not just your eyes that'll be satisfied but also your heart. And your ears, here's one song from the show's OST, Wake Up by Sung Joon:
