Zhou Mi was shocked. She had not expected to be found out.
"I... what are you talking about, Kyu?" Zhou Mi asked.
"You aren't the girl from years ago, are you?" Kyuhyun knew he had to be right. Knowing that there was no way she could hide it any longer, Zhou Mi gave in and told the truth.
"No, I'm not" she replied, with her head hung low.
"How do you know so much then?" Kyuhyun questioned.
"By chance, I found out that Ryeowook is the one you've been looking for. Then I found out things from her and pretended to be her" Zhou Mi admitted.
"How do I know you're not lying now?" Kyuhyun was suspicious.
"You're smart, Kyuhyun. I'm sure you'll know if you were being lied to" Zhou Mi simply replied, before turning around to walk out of the classroom that they were currently in. Luckily Kyuhyun had chosen to question her after school, so no one had witnessed her lie being exposed by Kyuhyun. Zhou Mi knew that she would have been embarrassed to death otherwise.
"Oh, and I'm really sorry for lying to you. I just wanted to know what it feels like to be loved by you, even if it was just for a while" Zhou Mi told Kyuhyun before leaving.
Kyuhyun thought about it for a while. Zhou Mi was right after all. He had always prided himself for being smart, and if Zhou Mi was lying about Ryeowook this time as well, he would be able to tell.
Of course, within days of the breakup, the whole class knew about it. It was obvious in the way Kyuhyun and Zhou Mi no longer constantly stuck to each other like glue. Neither would reveal the truth, however, merely stating that they were too different to be together. Fortunately for them, the class didn't pursue it any further.
Meanwhile, Kyuhyun began to notice things about Ryeowook that he'd never noticed before. For example, he noticed the way she puffed out her cheeks in frustration whenever there was something she didn't understand during lessons. For some reason, he found it really cute and he vaguely remembered her doing the same thing all those years ago in elementary school as well.
By the end of the year, Kyuhyun still couldn't be completely sure that Ryeowook was the girl from all those years ago, although they did share some similar traits. Surprisingly, Kyuhyun found that he didn't really care about whether she was really that same girl or not. Much as he didn't want to admit it, he'd fallen in love with Ryeowook a long time ago. She was smart, kind, pretty, easygoing, and she got along with anyone - definitely his ideal type of girl. He had just been too caught up in finding this "dream girl" from the past to realise it.
Even after figuring out his feelings for Ryeowook, it wasn't until his best friend Jongwoon started making a move on Ryeowook that Kyuhyun realised he had to do something, or he might lose her.
He'd known for a long time that Jongwoon liked the petite girl, but nothing made Kyuhyun burn with as much rage and jealousy as when Jongwoon asked Ryeowook out on a date. In front of the whole class. Ryeowook merely replied, "Now's not the time to talk about this, Jongwoon, we've got lessons in 5 minutes". The truth was, it would hurt her best friend Sungmin if she were to go out with Jongwoon. Besides, she didn't like Jongwoon in that way.
Kyuhyun didn't know what to make of the answer Ryeowook had given Jongwoon. She had not accepted, which relieved him greatly, but she had not rejected Jongwoon either, which led Kyuhyun to wonder if she might like Jongwoon. For that reason, he seemed distracted and out of sorts for the rest of the day.
