This Day in Yankees History:
1946 - The Yankees draw 66,545 fans to their doubleheader against the Cleveland Indians at home in the Bronx, breaking the one million attendance mark at the earliest date in MLB history. The Tribe take the opening game, 9-5, and the Yankees come back to win the nightcap by a score of 7-4.
1959 - The Yankees edge the Kansas City A's by a score of 9-8 in 13 innings. Mickey Mantle hits a homer in the 4th off of Murry Dickson, however it is Hector Lopez's RBI single that wins it.
1961 - Sticking with Mickey Mantle... In a rain-interrupted game at Yankee Stadium, Mantle's three-run home run in the 3rd inning is the difference in a 8-6 win over the A's. Teammate Roger Maris also hits a home run; the third time M&M have gone deep in the same game in this AL season.
1981 - The Yankees beat the Kansas City Royals 8-5. Not a particularly wondrous feat until you consider that the Yankees didn't use an actual starting pitcher to win the game. RP Jeff Nelson started, and was followed by Dave LaRoche and Mike Griffin. Goose Gossage would close and get the save. Providing key offence, Dave Winfield and Graig Nettles both hit home runs.
