Well, lets see....
My 21st birthday was last weekend. Did most of my drinking on Saturday night at campus, stumbled to another bar, drank beer, got a ride back. Pretty tame. Also had a few drinks in the airport this weekend, which was nice (slept on the plane for an hour, then did homework with a slight buzz). To date, I haven't shown ID.
The debutante ball was this weekend... quite the interesting time. After a 22 hour day (most of it travel/waiting for a bus), we pulled up to the house, and much to our surprise, the girls were still awake and scream-y. We mingled for what must have been less than 20 minutes, then departed for our host family houses. I stayed at a house with Rob Mobley (the black guy from USAFA) and Dan Miller, a firstie. The woman was very nice... the house was nice... no complaints I guess. Just weird staying there. Had this annoying cat. Went to Universal Studios after that, which goes against my anti-theme-park disposition. The whole scene was just very much Hollywood-y.
The ball itself was nice. We changed into our whites at the hotel, and we spent a few hours waltzing around the hotel mingling with the girls/parents and getting yelled at by the terrible photographers who wanted our pictures in awkward places. One of the dads was a marine, and he was just a nut... one of the first things he said was that he could shoot us from 200 yards with a pistol (...). It also came to light that he was carrying a pistol very early on (he's a cop too). Glad I didn't have his daughter. Jeffy Heck did. While posing for a family photo: "If you feel that poking in your back, that's my nine." Weird.
When we did all our practice runs, I kept counting out which girl I was going to get (it was by height) and kept ending up with the ringer (she didn't have a nice personality/looks). Fortunately, I ended up with a girl who had to have been the most friendly one there. She was probably the reason I had fun since she was such a sweetheart. She was also remarkably well-adjusted for growing up with money. She didn't seem proud that she drove a Lexus (after I had told her about my sick '89 gold camry wagon)... and while she never worked a job in her life, she had done 2200 hours of community service. Ironically, I got paid to clean beaches and work at an animal shelter in my youth... huh.... Anyways, she loved to dance, so I obliged, even though it was warm as hell in the ballroom. Ate surf-and-turf, extravagant deserts, danced to the live band, and just had a nice time.
Next morning, we went to a nice brunch at a house overlooking the valley. Jesus... that place must have been a few million. Delicious food and all that. The girls/families sent us off after another few hundred thousand photos and giving us baked goods/gift bags.
Went to sleep at 0130, woke up Monday morning at 0630 for drill practice.
Things have been terrible since. What can I say though.
In summary, LA was nice, but something seemed artificial about it.
Whatever.
Easter was fun.
