The last time I bought shoes for my children, in the spring of 2009, the room-to-grow sizes were 1 (Bert) and 3 (Ernie). Ernie got size 4 water shoes since the store was out of 3s, and the 4s were able to stay on but clearly too long.
Today the little dears told me that their shoes were pinching their toes. Sure enough, the toes were at the ends of the shoes, so after their half-day of nature camp, we bought some new shoes.
Bert got childrens' (which is the same as mens' but starts smaller) size 3. This is what Ernie wore 6 months ago. He also wears an 8 for length in long pants and shirts -- this child has NEVER worn any size larger than his age before.
Ernie got ladies' size 7. (Which is about the same as a childrens'/mens' size 5, but narrower.)
Size seven. *I* wear an 8 1/2. At the current rate of growth (which I hope does not continue since she also outgrew the length of all her size 8 and 10 pants, and now wears a 12 with the waist cinched in) I will be able to borrow her shoes in six months.
Holy mackerel.
